Manchester United star Donny van de Beek eyes summer move to AS Roma
According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera [Print Edition] (h/t The Mirror), Manchester United star Donny van de Beek has his heart set out on a potential move to AS Roma in the summer transfer window. This news is more than surprising, to say the least, now that Erik ten Hag is the man in charge at Old Trafford.
Van de Beek’s time in Manchester has not turned out to be the way it was expected to since he left Ajax. Former managers Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick opted against using him regularly, which had seriously cast doubts on his long-term future. However, there were hopes that the midfielder could finally get a fair chance after ten Hag took over the managerial role.
However, those hopes have now been diminished as van de Beek supposedly is eager to team up with Jose Mourinho at Roma this summer. Previously, the latter had tried to sign the midfielder last summer, but Man United had blocked the approach. The Italian side’s second attempt last January did not come to fruition as the Dutchman decided to move to Everton instead.
Highly unlikely!
Apparently, the Dutch international is keen to leave the Red Devils at all costs, having suffered in the past few seasons. That seems to have played a part in his decision despite ten Hag offering him the first clear-cut chance to express himself at the Theatre of Dreams.
It is highly advisable that this piece of information is taken with a pinch of salt as it does not make sense in the slightest. After all, ten Hag is likely to provide van de Beek with the right surroundings because of their prior connection due to their time together in Amsterdam.
Furthermore, one would also expect ten Hag to play van de Beek in his natural position as an attacking midfielder, where he would have the licence to make runs into the box as he did back in the Netherlands all those years ago. Not to mention, we are also chasing Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona, so his potential signing could see all three compatriots reunite once again this summer.
If that is the case, one might naturally ask why van de Beek would want to leave at all under the current circumstances. As such, it would be best not to form an opinion based on this news unless more reliable sources confirm the update in the future.

In fact, following Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard’s exits from the number ten position, van de Beek will have a greater chance of earning more regular game time moving forward. Bruno Fernandes was also subjected to criticisms from the fans last season, which paves the way for the Dutchman to make his case beyond this summer.
So let’s wait and see whether there is any weight to this update and whether the 25-year-old actually wants to move to Italy ahead of the upcoming campaign.
