Transfer News: Insane wage demands put off Manchester United pursuit of Paulo Dybala

According to the Daily Mail (h/t Metro), Manchester United are set to drop their pursuit of Argentinian superstar Paulo Dybala due to the insane wages the out of contract Juventus playmaker is demanding.

Dybala joined Juventus from Palermo in 2015 and after seven largely successful years in Turin, the player is set to move in search of pastures new come the summer. A huge hit upon his arrival at the Old Lady, the past couple of seasons hadn’t been kind to the Argentinian with injuries troubling him.

This season though, the hybrid attacking midfielder has had a renaissance of sorts with the Bianconeri putting in defining performances for a vastly underperforming team. The 28-year-old talented forward has played 39 times for the club this season scoring 15 goals and providing six assists.

Having failed to agree on a new deal with the club, Dybala is set to make a move this summer. Tottenham, Inter, Arsenal and Manchester United have all been credited with an interest in the talented playmaker but his wage demands of £280,000-a-week have apparently put the English clubs off.

Free yet expensive?

One main reason why so many clubs could be keen on signing Paulo Dybala is the fact that he is available on a free transfer.

However, this free transfer seems as if it could turn out really expensive for the club that signs him. Manchester United have an infamous reputation of having underperforming players as high earners at the club and that is the last thing we want to repeat.

There is absolutely no doubting Paulo Dybala’s quality. A delight to watch when at full flow, the Argentinian will undoubtedly add a lot to the Red Devils if he comes here. However, we are still not clear if it is a gamble worth taking.

Injuries and Covid have not been kind to the talented player for a few seasons now but he has bounced back strongly this year. Dybala’s versatility is a huge plus with the player capable of playing in various positions across the front line and even in midfield.

From a footballing perspective, Dybala can add a lot to the Red Devils if he joins here. However, the signing must not happen if it isn’t good for the financial health of the club.

United may have some high earners on their books right now but we don’t need to expand that list. However, one can then argue that the money the club saves in transfer fees for Dybala can then be utilised in paying him the wage he demands.
