Barcelona and Manchester United are keen to wrap up the Frenkie de Jong transfer saga this week
According to the Spanish outlet Sport (h/t Metro), Barcelona and Manchester United are looking to complete a transfer move for Frenkie de Jong by this week itself. He has further given more reasons for the English club to target him following his dominating display in midfield against Belgium recently.
Erik ten Hag has deemed de Jong his top target for this summer with plans to improve his midfield options ahead of the next season. Man United are growing optimistic about signing him with an agreement being close to being reached with Barca over a £70million transfer fee.
Furthermore, both clubs are plotting to finalise a move by this week to prevent a drawn-out transfer saga. The Red Devils are hoping that they can convince the Dutch international by this timeframe and are increasingly confident about doing so with de Jong now listening to their proposal following the latest contact.

Can Man Utd convince de Jong?
Securing the 25-year-old’s signature would be a massive statement from the Manchester board, which would showcase their willingness to support ten Hag and his plans. We need defensive midfield options in our ranks, considering how Nemanja Matic, our only natural option, has already been confirmed to leave this summer.
That puts us in a delicate situation as Fred and Scott McTominay are the only options who can deputise in that role. Seeing both of them in the pivot positions would be the last thing that most supporters want following their disappointing performances when they have been utilised in those places.
De Jong, who is technically able to progress the ball up front while being press resistant in nature, would be perfect for our needs right now. Moreover, his athleticism adds to the list of reasons that make him a suitable addition to the base of our midfield.

However, even if we reach common ground with the Catalans by this week, without de Jong’s approval, we would remain helpless right now. That is a major issue, especially when the La Liga ace wishes to stay at Camp Nou past this summer.

That being said, de Jong has not rejected the Mancunians and is in contact with them as of now. Furthermore, he is also aware of the Spanish giants’ intention to sell him as well, which could perhaps sway his mind in the coming days.
We would need to worry about competitors as Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich are assessing their options right now. Fortunately, we are the only ones willing to meet the asking price at this instant, which calls for the need to wrap up this pursuit at the earliest.
