Manchester United lose transfer race for Aurelien Tchouameni as Real Madrid switch is “imminent”

According to the Spanish publication AS (h/t The Sun), Manchester United have apparently lost the race to sign Aurelien Tchouameni as a Real Madrid switch is “imminent” after reaching a transfer agreement. This news would undoubtedly be a massive blow for the English club as they’re desperate for some additions in the holding midfield role this summer.

Tchouameni is set to leave AS Monaco in the summer transfer window. They already confirmed that he will be allowed to depart if that is his intention, which seems to be the case as of now. Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the midfielder has his eyes set on moving to Santiago Bernabeu ahead of the next season.

Man United were interested in signing the French international as Erik ten Hag had named Tchouameni his priority target. However, it is stated that Real are close to reaching a full agreement with Monaco after agreeing to pay £68million for the midfielder’s signature. Paris Saint-Germain were in the mix, but they failed in their attempt despite offering a larger wage package.

Man Utd must look elsewhere!

It looks like this piece of information is true after all, as Romano has confirmed this update in another tweet on his official handle. In fact, he has also given further news that personal terms have been agreed between Tchouameni’s agent and the Madrid based club even before the Champions League final.

In such a case, it seems like the Manchester side has lost this transfer tussle after all. Winning the battle would have been very difficult anyway due to our current situation compared to the other interested parties. The likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal were also linked with the Frenchman, but they are also in a similar boat as of now.

Unless something drastic happens, it would not be wise on the Red Devils’ side to keep pursuing the 22-year-old moving forward. Reinforcing the defensive midfield area is quite important, so it is understandable why ten Hag was keen to get hold of Tchouameni, who is arguably the best young defensive midfielder right now.

Nemanja Matic is our only natural holding option in the squad, and he will leave Old Trafford on a free transfer this summer. That puts into perspective how dire the situation is, so we must look elsewhere and find a solution to this problem ahead of the next campaign.

Then again, the Mancunians should have brought in a quality defensive midfielder last summer, as the issues were highlighted even before then. But surprisingly enough, the board opted against reinforcing that area leading to our current plight.

That being said, there is still hope that the management will get things done and solve their mistake by backing ten Hag this summer. Attracting top players would be difficult without Champions League football which means that we may have to search the market for sensible options who would jump at the chance of joining our club.
