Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag informed about the transfer budget and could have more funds if players sales are made

According to The Times (Subscription Required), new Manchester United permanent manager Erik ten Hag has been told the transfer budget he will be allotted ahead of the summer transfer window and could have more funds if a few players are sold.

He joins from Ajax Amsterdam, having led them to their third successive Eredivisie title. It was also the third league triumph for the manager, having joined the Dutch side in 2017. He also led them to the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019.

ten Hag will take charge of the team for the first time during the club’s pre-season tour, where he will get a chance to assess the squad. The Dutchman will be able to take a call on who remains and who leaves, as he looks to lay down his mark on the side.

A squad rebuild is expected to take place in Manchester in the coming weeks, given the number of outgoing players as they reach the end of their contracts with the English club. Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, and Lee Grant already make up six players leaving on free transfers.

Central midfield and attack reinforcements needed

ten Hag will be given around £120m to spend on signing new players in the summer transfer window, with the club looking to reinforce their central midfield and attack options. Aside from new incoming stars, the ex-Ajax coach will look to promote starlets from the academy, given his reputation for doing so.

Aside from the allotted budget, the 52-year-old will also be able to get his hands on more funds from the money raised from player sales. Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Anthony Martial are all considering their futures, and their departures could see the club get more income.

It remains to be seen just how much money the Red Devils can get if they sell these four players, given that they have been underwhelming for the club in recent years. Only time will tell if the Manchester side is able to make a profit on selling these stars.

While Martial was sent on loan to Sevilla in January, the remaining players had to make do with a place on the bench this season. That said, it was not all good news for the striker, who barely made an impression in Spain.

The price tags on these stars will determine how much money the club can recoup for funds to sign new players, but it may perhaps not be that significant given their recent performances. Furthermore, United need to realise that their failure to qualify for the Champions League this term means that they do not have as much pulling power as they used to.

Given this context, it will be interesting to see who ten Hag will be able to sign over the next few months. It certainly is an exciting time to be a fan of the club as the Dutchman looks to bring in a new era, with supporters optimistic about the future.
