According to journalist Sam Pilger on Twitter (h/t The Express), Manchester United are “increasingly confident” about reaching an agreement with Barcelona to sign Frenkie de Jong on a potential transfer. The former has expressed a strong interest in signing the midfielder, and they could perhaps succeed in their attempt following this development.
De Jong has been linked with a move to Old Trafford after Erik ten Hag was confirmed to be the next manager. Now. Man United are becoming more optimistic that they can finalise a move for the midfielder this summer. Barca are looking to solve their financial crisis and could sell their prized asset for that reason.
The Catalans also want to sign Robert Lewandowski, who is their top target for this summer. Their needs could play into the Red Devils’ intentions, with de Jong being a means to raise some quick funds at the end of this season. The fans would be delighted to see this update as the club have taken a step closer to reaching the goal.
The supporters are ecstatic at this moment to see that the Manchester side are finally being optimistic about their chances of signing de Jong. The Dutchman could be key to ensuring that our midfield can be bolstered going into the next campaign.
The midfield is already in a delicate situation which is evident from our inability to maintain control during matches. Departures of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba would further make things worse as we are left with a lack of technical options in the centre of the pitch.
Fred and Scott McTominay would be our only choices in the pivot roles, and partnering them together would not instil confidence considering how the fanbase has named them “McFred” due to their disappointing performances as a midfield pairing.
Hence, bringing in de Jong would go a long way to help us overcome our issues, and Erik ten Hag could replicate what he did with the Blaugrana ace and Donny van de Beek at Ajax. However, even if we are confident about agreeing to terms with the La Liga side, there are obstacles that still lie in our way.
De Jong would still need to be convinced about a move to Old Trafford. The 25-year-old could perhaps be influenced by the prospect of reuniting with ten Hag. The board is looking to do just that, but whether that will play a part in this pursuit or not remains to be seen.
The Mancunians would also need to keep an eye out for competitors who could scupper their plans. Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain could cause problems, so it is imperative that we gain a foothold in their pursuit at the earliest.
