Newcastle United set to propose swap deal between Karl Darlow and Dean Henderson to Manchester United
According to The Sun, Newcastle United are set to propose a swap deal between Karl Darlow and Dean Henderson to Manchester United. The former want to strengthen their goalkeeping position and are looking to raid Old Trafford for that reason.
Henderson has fallen out of favour due to David de Gea’s resurgence this season. As such, the former is looking to leave Man United to earn regular game time. However, the shot-stopper only wants a season-long loan transfer as he still believes in becoming a starter one day at de Gea’s cost.
Newcastle have already expressed their interest in signing Henderson as their number one goalkeeper for the next campaign. Now, they are willing to offer Darlow to the Red Devils in return for the 25-year-old as Erik ten Hag requires a shot-stopper following Lee Grant’s retirement.
Best for all parties?
Journalist Ekrem Konur via The Sun recently claimed that ten Hag considers de Gea his number one goalkeeper for the next season. In fact, the Spanish ace will sign a new contract, which will see him get tied down at Carrington until the summer of 2025.
If that is the case, then Henderson could perhaps be forced to contemplate his future once again. De Gea is only 31 at this moment, and he still has many years left in his bag as goalkeepers usually have a longer playing career compared to outfield players.
Then again, Henderson may perhaps be banking on de Gea’s poor ball-playing abilities. After all, that has played a major part in the latter’s inability to break into Luis Enrique’s Spain national team. Ten Hag has employed a similar system at Ajax, where shot-stoppers are asked to do more with the ball at their feet.
That could open up the way for Henderson to make his case with ten Hag, although whether that will happen or not remains to be seen. Perhaps it is best if the second choice star leaves on loan, although we have to wait and see whether the Magpies are interested in a temporary move.
If the Toons are willing to accept a loan exchange between Henderson and Darlow, then it would be in the best interest of all the parties. Henderson can earn regular minutes while Eddie Howe’s side can replace Martin Dubravka with him.
