Manchester United getting close to extending the contract of goalkeeper David de Gea to keep him at Old Trafford until 2025

According to journalist Ekrem Konur on Twitter (h/t The Sun), Manchester United are close to extending the contract of their star goalkeeper David de Gea, who has been in outstanding form for the club this season.

The Spaniard has arguably been the best player on the pitch for United this term, getting the team out of difficult situations with his quick reflexes and shot-stopping ability. If not for the goalkeeper’s saves, perhaps the Red Devils would be further down the Premier League table.

The Manchester side somehow crawled to sixth place in the points table, seeing them miss out on Champions League football next season. Alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Anthony Elanga, de Gea has been one of the few success stories to come out of the current campaign.

His stunning form saw deputy goalkeepers Dean Henderson and Tom Heaton barely get any sniff of first-team action, having to settle for a place on the bench. Now, it seems as though the club are set to reward the player for his form by extending his contract.

No. 1 for a few more years

Konur has revealed that the Red Devils are close to tying down de Gea at Old Trafford until 2025, keeping the 31-year-old in Manchester for over a decade. The Spain international joined the Premier League outfit from Atletico Madrid in 2011 as a young talent.

It remains to be seen if United will increase his current salary of £350,000-a-week, but his contract extension seems to indicate that new manager Erik ten Hag has de Gea in his plans for the future. The goalkeeper has been first-choice between the sticks until now, and that could continue for a few more years from the looks of it.

This will come as great news to United fans, who have adored the keeper for his performances over the year. de Gea has been the No. 1 for the team ever since his debut under Sir Alex Ferguson a decade ago, and ten Hag seems to have the same thoughts from what it seems.

de Gea’s stay spells trouble for Henderson, who has had to play deputy to the Spaniard until now. Although he briefly replaced de Gea as the club’s first choice last season, Henderson has been unable to sustain his grip on the spot.

It remains to be seen if de Gea’s contract extension sees the departure of Henderson in the summer. The Englishman has gone on loan in the Premier League with Sheffield United in the past, and only time will tell if any other club takes him away temporarily.

de Gea’s form has affected Henderson’s growth at his boyhood club, but United fans cannot complain much. Their Spanish keeper has been their most consistent star over the last decade, and if he keeps up this form for the next few years, he could depart the club as a modern legend.
