Sevilla president Jose Castro confirms that Anthony Martial will return to Manchester United after his loan spell
As quoted by The Sun, Sevilla president Jose Castro has confirmed that loanee Anthony Martial will return to Manchester United in the summer after the end of his loan spell, with the La Liga club not interested in keeping him further.
Martial joined Sevilla on a short-term loan deal in January, keeping him in Spain until the end of the season. The player fell out of favour under interim manager Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford, forcing him to look for opportunities elsewhere.
However, the forward will now be heading back to United, said Castro. The Frenchman has failed to impress the Spanish side, scoring just one goal. He was also jeered by the Sevilla fans for his disappointing performances on the pitch.
“Anthony Martial will return to Man United”.
After leaving the Red Devils on a temporary basis to play regular football elsewhere, the France international will now be heading back to Manchester with his tail between his legs. It remains to be seen if he will be part of the English side’s first-team squad next season.
“We spent important money on him”
Sevilla were clearly not happy with Martial’s displays on the pitch, with the La Liga club only managing to finish fourth in the league table. They covered 40% of the striker’s £240,000-a-week salary, but failed to get the most out of him.
Castro cribbed about the fact that despite the Spanish side spending important money on the striker, the loan spell did not work out. Aside from this, the club president said that the player’s injury record was also a problem and that they had decided against buying the 26-year-old on a permanent deal.
“We spent important money on him but it didn’t work. Also, he had injuries and we’re not going to buy him on a permanent deal”.
This will come as a major blow to Martial, who had sought a move to Sevilla to gain more minutes and convince others that he was still capable of delivering at the highest level. However, injuries and a poor scoring record have scuppered his grand plans.
He will now return to the Theatre of Dreams in the summer, but there is no guarantee that the Frenchman will continue his career at United next season. He had fallen down the pecking order in attack, having to warm the bench as Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani were preferred over him.

Rangnick has already announced the departure of Cavani in the summer, but that still does not provide much hope to Martial about his future in Manchester. Erik ten Hag will take over the first-team squad in the coming weeks, and the striker will need to work hard in order to impress the new boss.
Once a crowd favourite, the ex-Monaco man has seen his form and confidence suffer in the last few years. If he digs deep and manages to force himself into ten Hag’s plans for next season, we may yet see more of Martial on the pitch at Old Trafford in the near future.
