According to The Times (Subscription Required), Manchester City are contemplating making a bid to sign Kalvin Phillips amidst interest from Manchester United for a potential transfer. The former seems to be pressing ahead with their plans to facilitate a move for the holding midfielder this summer.
Man City are set to lose Fernandinho at the end of this season, which has forced them to search the market for replacements. Phillips is one of the several midfield options they have looked at, but he has taken the top spot in the shortlist at this stage. This news would be a blow for Man United, who are keen to sign him to strengthen their midfield as well.
The Citizens are considering making a proposal to finalise a transfer but could find it difficult due to the hefty competition. West Ham United, Arsenal and Aston Villa are the other interested parties who are actively vying to secure the England international’s services. The Red Devils have a lot of roadblocks to overcome if they hope to sign him after this term.
Pep Guardiola’s side’s latest stance does not help us in any case, especially when we have obstacles that none of the other interested parties face when it comes to targeting the 26-year-old. The fact that they have now made him their top midfield target would cause concerns for those at Old Trafford.
Moreover, the Premier League winners’ attempt to make a proposal further dampens our chances of signing the Leeds United star due to their stature. Let’s be real, they are in a far better place than us making them a much more attractive proposition.
Phillips being a life-long Leeds fan is quite well-known at this point, which does raise doubts on whether he would agree to join us. After all, we do have quite a stern rivalry with his team.
That being said, Daniel James had left us to move to Elland Road last summer, which does provide some hope when it comes to signing Phillips. At the same time, we also have to see whether the Whites would agree to part ways with their superstar or not moving forward.
Dropping down to the Championship may have forced Jesse Marsch’s side to sell their prized assets to compensate for the financial blow. However, they survived the relegation battle, which would naturally reduce the chances of securing Phillips’ services. He also has a contract until 2024, giving them more control over his future.
It would be a major statement indeed if we can pull off such a coup, looking at the number of obstacles in our pathway. Midfield is an area that we must bolster this summer, but perhaps it may be wise to look elsewhere and focus our attention on more attainable targets due to these issues.
