Transfer News: Serie A minnows eye summer switch for veteran Man United star

Fabrizio Romano: U.S. Salernitana president Danilo Iervolino wishes to sign Manchester United ace Edinson Cavani

As relayed by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Unione Sportiva Salernitana 1919 president Danilo Iervolino has spoken about his interest in signing outgoing Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani in the summer transfer window.

Salernitana managed to finish 17th in the Serie A points table this season, escaping relegation from the top-flight by just one point. This was also their first appearance in the league after a long break, finishing second in Serie B the previous campaign.

The club are now preparing to sign new players in the upcoming summer transfer window to bolster their squad and ensure that they finish higher in the league next term. The Italian side will surely be looking to avoid yet another nervy end to the season, having barely survived the drop this time.

They celebrated their return to Serie A with the signing of Franck Ribery last summer, roping in the veteran forward from Fiorentina. The Frenchman was also made captain of the side, with the club looking to the experienced winger to inspire them to victory.

“I’d love to sign Edinson Cavani as free agent”

Iervolino seems to be keen on repeating the trick this summer as well and signing a big-name player to add to their squad. Romano relayed the club president’s desire to sign Cavani as a free agent, saying that the striker would be an incredible gift to the city. The Salernitana president also claimed that he will try to keep Ribery at the club for another season.

Cavani is set to depart United on a Bosman transfer when his contract runs out in the coming weeks, bringing an end to a two-year stay at Old Trafford. The 35-year-old played his final game for the Red Devils in a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace over the weekend.

Having joined the Manchester side from Paris Saint-Germain for free, the Uruguayan was handed the famous No. 7 jersey and brought into the attack alongside Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood in 2020. The striker’s goals helped the club finish second in the Premier League in his debut campaign.

However, the 2021/22 season did not go according to plan for the veteran. Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival and persistent injuries kept Cavani out of the starting lineup for months on end. He barely featured for the Red Devils this term, and when he rarely did, he has been unable to contribute meaningfully.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has already confirmed his departure in the summer, which gives Iervolino the chance to snap him up for free. The Uruguay international’s goals may prove valuable to Salernitana, who will look to improve on their 17th place finish in Serie A this season.

If he does join the Italian club for free in the summer, then Cavani’s prior experience playing for Napoli and Palermo is sure to help him settle in. At 35, however, it remains to be seen how much longer he can continue his playing career.
