Manchester United defender Luke Shaw kept waiting on new contract offer until Erik ten Hag gives seal of approval

According to The Sun, Manchester United defender Luke Shaw could be left waiting on his new deal offered by the club until he gets the approval from incoming new permanent manager Erik ten Hag, leaving his contract situation in limbo.

The Englishman has been first-choice at left-back ever since his arrival from Southampton in 2014. Having arrived as just a teenager, the player has grown leaps and bounds in stature and has even become a full England international.

Despite the rise of Brandon Williams and the arrival of Alex Telles from Porto, Shaw has managed to keep his place in the squad. He continues to be a constant attacking threat down the left flank, combining well with his wingers.

However, the current campaign has seen the 26-year-old ravaged by injury issues. The defender continues to remain on the sidelines, as Telles has stepped up in his place and is expected to start yet another match as the Manchester side face Crystal Palace in the final game of the season.

ten Hag to assess Shaw future

With just one more year left on his current contract, Shaw is in line to pocket a new deal worth £180,000-a-week. However, this offer currently remains frozen, as ten Hag is keen to assess whether the England international will be part of his future plans.

Even if the Dutchman does not see the ex-Saints man having a future at Old Trafford, the Premier League club will choose to trigger the extension in the player’s current deal to keep him in Manchester until 2024. United currently have Alex Telles to compete with Shaw down that flank, with Brandon Williams set to return from his loan spell at Norwich City this summer.

Evidently, the club is keen to keep Shaw around for the next couple of years, but it could be upto ten Hag to decide whether his long-term future lies at Old Trafford. Hopefully, the player is able to return to pre-season training having recovered from his injury to impress the new boss.

The next season will be crucial for the defender, as he looks to convince ten Hag of his importance in the squad. The club’s plan to trigger the player’s extension in his contract for another 12 months will also help the manager assess Shaw and take a call on whether or not he deserves a new deal.

The Red Devils have already offered Bruno Fernandes a new deal before the arrival of ten Hag, tying him down with the club for a few more years. However, the situation with Shaw seems to be different, although the reasons for that are unclear.

Shaw has no doubt proven in the past that he deserves to be the first-choice at left-back, putting in the hard work to win over his doubters. His return from injury could now be fueled by a similar desire, wanting to impress ten Hag and get that new deal that the club is prepared to offer him.
