Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba forced to take pay cut to join either Juventus or PSG

According to Italian reporter Alfonso Pedulla on Twitter (h/t The Sun), Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba will have to take a pay cut in order to join either Juventus or Paris Saint-Germain in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Frenchman sees his current deal with United expire at the end of the season, which means that the player is set to become a free agent in the summer. Thus far, there have been no indications from either the club or Pogba about renewing his deal and staying for a few more years.

Into the final few months of his contract, the midfielder is free to talk to foreign clubs regarding a potential transfer and sign a pre-contract agreement. This has seen European giants such as Juventus, PSG, and Real Madrid battle it out for his signature in the coming weeks.

The France international could perhaps seal a return to Juventus in the upcoming transfer window, heading back to the place where he won four consecutive Scudetto titles between 2012 and 2016. He also managed to reach the final of the Champions League in 2015 with the Turin side.

Massive pay cut to leave United

However, a potential transfer to Italy will force Pogba to take a massive pay cut. The World Cup winner currently earns around £290,000-a-week at United. In comparison, his former employers can only afford to pay the 29-year-old a maximum of £130,000-a-week.

Uber-rich PSG can offer him slightly more, with the French side willing to offer £165,000-a-week. Although Real were strongly linked with the midfielder, perhaps his wage demands have caused them to ease off the player.

Pogba is currently on the sidelines nursing an injury, and many fans felt that they saw the last of the academy graduate when he went off injured against Liverpool a few weeks ago. With just one game to go until the end of the season, a return to action looks unlikely.

It certainly seems to be a case of deja vu for the Red Devils, who previously saw the Frenchman leave Manchester for Juventus on a free transfer in 2012. A repeat of the same incident could still take place, although it remains to be seen if these reduced wages could change his mind about leaving United.

He has certainly not enjoyed the same success in England as he did in Italy, managing to only win a League Cup and Europa League in his first season back at Old Trafford. Injuries have also hampered his progress at the club, which has seen him fail to meet expectations on the pitch.

If the France international has no intention of continuing at United, then playing on reduced wages seems to be the way forward for the player. Only time will tell if this will see Pogba perform a transfer u-turn to stay with the Premier League club.
