Speaking to The United Stand (h/t Express), football journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United have identified Darwin Nunez and Richarlison as potential transfer targets to boost their attacking ranks in the summer.
The club have failed to get going during the current campaign, seeing them fail to win any trophies or qualify for the Champions League next term. A big reason for their poor term has been the lack of goals upfront, with their current crop of attackers failing to hit the mark.
Man United seem to be well aware of the issue, as Romano revealed that the English club are looking to sign a striker in the upcoming summer transfer window. Only after signing a forward will the Red Devils then decide on how much
they want to spend on midfielder reinforcements.“Once Manchester United sign a striker this summer, then they will decide on how much they want to spend on a midfielder.”
Aside from Cristiano Ronaldo, who as usual has been enjoying a stellar campaign, the club’s other forward options have barely made any impact on the team’s supply of goals. Edison Cavani has barely featured after being hampered by injury issues, while Marcus Rashford has lost his form and confidence on the pitch.
This has led to Ronaldo almost single-handedly shouldering the responsibility of scoring the goals for the side and driving them forward, but this could soon change as the Old Trafford outfit have been looking into signing a new striker at the end of the season.
Romano said that the club were looking at Benfica ace Nunez and Everton forward Richarlison to take up the striker position next term. If the Premier League side manages to snap up any one of these stars, then it could reduce Ronaldo’s workload – if he stays beyond the summer, that is.
“Two players Manchester United have discussed in the striker position is Darwin Nunez and Richarlison.”
These players could also prove to be a younger replacement for the Portugal captain, who is not getting any younger at the age of 37. Although he has not shown any signs of slowing down, Man United need a long-term plan for their attack, and either Richarlison or Nunez could fill that role.
Nunez has been in spectacular form for Benfica this term, scoring plenty of goals for his team in the Primeira Liga as well as the Champions League. The 22-year-old gained a lot of attention in the European competition, managing to score against the likes of Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona.
Richarlison is a name more familiar to United fans, who have witnessed the 25-year-old churn out consistent performances for Everton over the past few years. He has also become an important part of the Brazil national team, seeing his stock rise over time.
Between Nunez and Richarlison, the latter could have an advantage in settling into life at Old Trafford as he has vast experience of playing in the Premier League already. However, Red Devils fans will not complain if the club manage to get either of the two strikers, as they look to welcome a fresh face to lead the line next season.
