Ex-Manchester United ace Diego Forlan claims his countryman Darwin Nunez would be a good fit at his former club

Speaking to Breaking the Lines on their Youtube channel (h/t Daily Mail), former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan believes that his countryman and Benfica ace Darwin Nunez would prove to be a good fit for his former club.

Nunez has been a revelation for Benfica this season, making the difference for his team in the Primeira Liga as well as the UEFA Champions League. He has become their go-to man for goals, with the Uruguayan managing to regularly find the net.

Forlan, who won a Premier League and FA Cup with Man United, described the 22-year-old to be a player who has a lot of potential and could fit in at Old Trafford. However, the former star urged others to have patience with the up-and-coming ace, as he is only improving with more experience.

“He is a player who has a lot of potential and he could fit in at Manchester United. But obviously, everyone needs to have patience, although he is getting better with more and more experience.”

United fans will especially have noticed that he managed to score against arch-rivals Liverpool in both legs of the quarterfinals of the UCL, which will drum up a certain interest for the player. Unfortunately for Nunez, his goals would not be enough to send them through to the next round.

“It would be nice to see him there”

The Uruguayan has enjoyed a particularly impressive season in Europe, scoring against the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Ajax Amsterdam. The Red Devils could certainly have done with a player like that in their midst this term, given how poor they have been in front of goal.

Forlan advocated for the Benfica man to make a move to his former employers, saying that it was a club that gives you time and makes you feel comfortable. The retired star himself took a long time to settle in at the club, although he never made the impact one expected from him.

“He would not be a bad signing for Manchester United and it would be nice to see him there. It is a club that gives you time, that makes you feel comfortable and as if you are in a familiar place, very cosy and nice. It would be spectacular having him playing for Manchester United.”

Forlan struggled to get going at Old Trafford, failing to score for the team over long periods and unable to become the goal machine everyone expected him to be. However, he always gave everything for the side, and the supporters still have fond memories of him scoring a famous double over arch-rivals Liverpool.

The former striker’s comments suggest that he seems grateful to the club for allowing himself to take time and get comfortable in his new setting, believing that the same can be expected for Nunez if he decides to make the switch to Manchester.

A new striker is definitely the need of the hour at Man United, given that only Cristiano Ronaldo has managed to supply the goals this season. Edinson Cavani has spent the majority of the campaign injured, while Marcus Rashford has looked like a shadow of the player he once was.

Anthony Martial’s loan spell at Sevilla expires in the summer and is expected back at his parent club, but his future in England is uncertain given his previous lack of game time. The team could certainly do with a boost in attack, and it remains to be seen if Forlan’s comments convince Nunez to make a move ahead of the new season.
