Manchester United receive transfer boost for Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as Juventus aware of ‘impossible’ battle

According to Tuttosport, via Sport Witness (h/t Mirror), Juventus have been made aware that they are unlikely to snap up Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, with Manchester United well-positioned to secure a transfer for the midfielder.

Milinkovic-Savic has been one of the standout performers for Lazio, ever since his move to Italy from Genk in 2015. He has been a regular in the team as well, working hard for his side from the middle of the pitch and setting the tempo.

His displays in midfield have caught the attention of Man United, who are looking for similar kinds of players in the summer. With Erik ten Hag arriving from AjaxAmsterdam to take over the club at the end of the season, a squad rebuild is expected to take place, with Milinkovic-Savic a likely transfer target.

However, they may face competition from Juventus for securing the services of the player. The Italian giants have regularly seen the Serbian in action at close quarters in the league, and are very well aware of what the 27-year-old offers on the field.

Juventus resigned to losing to United

In good news for United, the Bianconeri are said to be very aware that winning a transfer battle against the English side is next to impossible due to their financial clout. The Serie A giants are in no position to compete with the Red Devils financially, despite their status in Italy.

For a long time, the Bianconeri have enjoyed being the favourites when it comes to stealing the best talents in the Italian top-flight for themselves. However, in a rare situation this time around, they are already willing to give up on signing Milinkovic-Savic, which is a massive transfer boost for the Manchester side.

It is no shock to know that the biggest weak link that the Red Devils have on their side is the midfield. The current crop of options they possess have failed to both support the players in attack as well as shield the defence from waves of opposition attacks.

Ever since the retirement of Michael Carrick in 2018, Man United have lacked a midfield lynchpin that can dictate the tempo during matches and keep the pulse of the team alive and ticking. Although Nemanja Matic has proved to be an able midfielder, his age seems to have caught up with his legs.

Paul Pogba has dazzled only in flashes, while Fred and Scott McTominay have not proven to be quality players in midfield when it comes to taking on stronger opposition. By bringing in someone like Milinkovic-Savic, the side is guaranteed someone who promises steel and reliability in the middle of the pitch.

The Serbia international has been consistently producing for Lazio for over seven years now, which is rare to see in the modern game. That is what is missing at United at the moment, and by signing him, we could finally address the problems that have been plaguing the team for a long time.
