Manchester United leading the race to seal Sergej Milinkovic-Savic transfer after Lazio star’s agent shows him offer

According to Gazzetta dello Sport via Sport Witness (h/t The Sun), Manchester United and PSG are in pole position to land Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in the summer after the player’s agent showed him the offer from the English side.

The Serbian has been in fine form in Serie A this season, pulling the strings in midfield for Lazio and establishing himself as a regular in the side. His performances in Italy have caught the eye of several clubs at the end of the season, with United one of the interested sides.

Although the Rome side values him at a price range closer to £85m, they may be unlikely to get the expected sum for the midfielder. In fact, they are much more likely to land around £60m and will part with Milinkovic-Savic in the upcoming transfer window if any team matches the price.

That is still a steep price to pay to secure the services of the 27-year-old, who has been with Lazio since 2015 after moving to Serie A from Genk. Now, it looks like he may be on the move once again, with England and France likely destinations.

Offers from United and PSG

That is because, alongside the Red Devils, Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be at the forefront of the transfer race for the midfielder. Both clubs are said to have made bids worth £55m to the Italian side, and Milinkovic-Savic’s agent has presented these offers to his client.

His agent was in attendance over the weekend during Lazio’s 2-1 defeat to AC Milan on Sunday, and presented the offers to the Serbia international when they met after. With the player out of contract in 2024, Lazio may be tempted to cash in on their star midfielder and are willing to let him leave this summer.

Both United and PSG’s offers for the Serbian are short of what Lazio expect, but at least the Red Devils have made an approach signalling their interest in the player. The good news is that they are said to be leading the race for the midfielder, although they will need to beat off the French side’s interest in him.

Midfield has been a weak link for the Old Trafford outfit for years now, and the team are yet to find an appropriate replacement for Michael Carrick, who retired in 2018. A host of names have been linked to the Manchester side in recent times, but there have been very few midfield additions of late.

Furthermore, reinforcements are necessary at the Theatre of Dreams, given the impending exits from the first team. Paul Pogba has shown no intention of signing a new deal with the club and is set to depart once again for free, while Nemanja Matic has already announced his decision to leave in the summer.

A new era is expected to be ushered in when new manager Erik ten Hag takes over at the end of the season, with the Dutchman looking to build a new team that can bring back the glory days to United. Only time will tell whether Milinkovic-Savic forms part of that new-look squad. His skillset makes him an able midfielder on and off the ball, and is a player that United could really do with in the near future.
