Ajax ace Brian Brobbey jokingly begs Erik ten Hag to sign him for Manchester United in cheeky transfer plea

Speaking after his side’s 1-0 win against NEC Nijmegen yesterday (h/t The Sun), Ajax Amsterdam striker Brian Brobbey has joked about moving to Manchester United in the future after his head coach Erik ten Hag was recently announced as the English side’s new manager.

Brobbey, who is on loan at Ajax from RB Leipzig, scored the only goal of the game last night as the Amsterdam side sank their opponents in the dying minutes of the game. The win kept his team on top of the Eredivisie table.

The striker responded to the news about ten Hag moving positively, saying that he was happy for the head coach and that he deserved it after everything he had done for Ajax.

“I am very happy for him and he really deserves it after everything he has done for Ajax.”

The Dutch giants are aiming to win a hat-trick of league titles under the incoming United manager, and Brobbey’s goal against NEC Nijmegen ensured that they stay four points ahead of second-placed PSV Eindhoven in the league table.

“Joking joking”

Brobbey has managed to rack up five goals in 11 games since his return to Ajax from RB Leipzig in January, on a temporary basis until the summer. The Dutch striker only secured a move to the Bundesliga last summer, before being loaned back to his former club.

When quizzed about ten Hag’s imminent move to Old Trafford at the end of the season, the Leipzig loanee joked that he hoped that the manager would bring him to Manchester in two years in a cheeky transfer plea.

“If only he brings me with him in two years…. no no.. joking joking!”

It is no secret that the incumbent Ajax boss is planning a squad overhaul at United when he takes charge from the summer, with the current options at the Theatre of Dreams proving to be miles behind their direct rivals in terms of quality and desire.

With 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo and 35-year-old Edinson Cavani currently leading the line for the Manchester side, the need for a younger replacement is evident, especially given the fact that the former’s form in 2022 has been patchy while the latter has barely featured due to injuries.

Brobbey may not be a name that we have seen linked to the Red Devils in the past, but if he does continue to impress over the next couple of seasons, then perhaps his wish of moving to United in two years may come true – even if he mentioned it as a joke. But there is nothing to suggest that the Red Devils are, or will ever be keen on signing the Dutchman.

For now, United fans will be looking forward to the summer transfer window to see who the Dutchman can snap up and which young striker they can look to welcome. Whoever that is, he may be expected to battle another young striker in Marcus Rashford for a place in the first team.
