Interim manager Ralf Rangnick humiliated after Liverpool loss and says that Manchester United are six years behind rivals

Speaking to beIN SPORTS after his side’s 4-0 loss to Liverpool, Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick reacted to the defeat and claimed that he was humiliated and embarrassed and that his team were six years behind their arch-rivals.

United were blown away by the Merseyside club, who stormed into the lead within five minutes of the game and added one more before the break to establish a 2-0 lead at half-time. Things only got worse from there, as Liverpool added another couple of goals to the scoreline by the end of the final whistle.

The Red Devils only managed one shot on target and barely had any possession. Paul Pogba also had to depart the pitch within ten minutes of the start after picking up an injury, while the team were already without key stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane, and Luke Shaw for the game.

The result left the Manchester side in sixth place, denting their chances of finishing in the top four of the Premier League table and qualifying for the Champions League next season. Liverpool meanwhile, temporarily moved to the top of the league table after beating their arch-rivals at home.

“They’re six years ahead of us”

The difference in quality between the two sides were apparent on the field, with the Old Trafford outfit struggling to come to terms with the passing, running, and attacking qualities of their opponents. Jurgen Klopp’s team were miles ahead in all aspects of the game, resulting in the goal-heavy scoreline in the end.

Rangnick said that the heavy defeat to Liverpool was embarrassing, completely disappointing, and humiliating while accepting that the Reds were six years ahead of United. He also insisted that it takes time to reach that level, reminding everyone that Klopp finished eighth in his first season at Anfield.

“It’s embarrassing, it’s completely disappointing and also humiliating, but we’ve got to accept that they’re six years ahead of us. When you compare that squad that Liverpool has with the one that Jurgen inherited when he came six years ago I think at the end of his first season they finished eighth.”

But what the German must remember is that our arch-rivals made two finals that year- the UEFA Europa League and the EFL Cup. Although they lost both, Klopp’s influence on the team was showing and the players seemed to be working in tandem with their new boss.

Liverpool will end this season having completed the double over United, with an aggregate 9-0 scoreline to boast. The fact that they came to Old Trafford and put five goals past the home team is embarrassing enough to stomach for Red Devils supporters.

Over the years, Klopp and the club have invested in quality players who can adapt and excel in his system, and the results are showing of late. They have won the Carabao Cup, UEFA Champions League, and Premier League titles in recent years as proof of their action plan working.

The Manchester side meanwhile, have not won a trophy since 2017 and have since gone through three managers at the helm. Rangnick is the latest one to take the job, although he has been roped in on an interim basis until the summer.

The system needs fixing, but will take time and changes cannot be expected overnight. The first step the club have taken is to appoint a new permanent manager ahead of the new season, and from there, they need to identify what players will best suit his style of play and can benefit the team in their quest for silverware.
