Ralf Rangnick demands Manchester United players show character vs Norwich City

Ralf Rangnick has expressed that the Manchester United players must respond well by showing “character” against Norwich City later today. His side are on the back of a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of a struggling Everton side in the previous Premier League fixture.

Man United will host the league fixture later today, where they will take on another relegation-threatened side in Norwich. However, the loss to the Toffees should indicate that this match would be a challenge for them regardless of the visitors’ situation. What’s more, the game later today would also be a testament to the players’ mental strength and whether they can respond with a strong performance or not.

Speaking in the pre-match presser (h/t Manchester United official website), Rangnick is adamant that the Red Devils must perform to their best and respond with a strong reaction. He added that the match would be “a test of character” for the players, especially when they are at the risk of dropping points to relegation-threatened teams in succession.

What can we expect for Man Utd?

“I am pretty positive that we will show a reaction tomorrow. This has to happen, we have to show that we owe it to ourselves, we owe it to our supporters, we owe that to the whole club and yes, as I said, it is definitely a test of character but we have to be aware that if we invest enough energy into that game with regard to total distance, sprints, fast runs… if we are tactically prepared for that game, which we will do, we always do that, we will give them the best possible game plan, we will try to with regard to formation and line-up to start with the best possible team. Then it’s up to the players to show on the pitch that they are still ambitious, and they want to finish the season on the highest and best possible note.”

Our form in the last few weeks has come spiralling down as we lost more ground in the race for a top-four finish in the league table. The defeat at the hands of Frank Lampard’s side was a morale denting outcome as they were struggling to stay afloat ahead of the drop zone.

We gave them the three points as the players did not show enough intensity to turn the game around in our favour. We cannot afford to see a repeat of that this time around, especially against the Canaries, who are dead last in the league right now.

Qualifying for the next season’s Champions League seems to be a distant possibility even though it is mathematically possible for us to still achieve that goal. However, our current level of performance would not be enough to ensure that we even have a chance to achieve that objective.

Dean Smith’s side are one of the worst teams in the England top division in terms of the attack and defence. The reverse fixture against them should be a testament to the stern challenge that awaits us, considering how we could only muster a 1-0 win against them and that too thanks to a penalty.

That cannot be the case this time around, as we need a display that would uplift the entire club despite the match being against a struggling team. Let’s hope that the players can overcome the struggles and showcase their mental strength as it could also prove their worth to the incoming manager who will lead us from the next season onwards.
