Police called to Manchester United training ground as fans hold demonstration against the Glazers in a protest

According to the Mirror, police forces were called to the Manchester United training ground facilities at Carrington as fans descended on the area in a demonstration against the club owners, the Glazers. There is no news of any mishaps because of this but such situations do pose a security threat to players and club personnel.

United fans have had a rocky relationship with their American club owners, with the supporters feeling that the Glazers saw the Manchester side as a cash cow, instead of actually investing in the club’s resources to better the footballing side of it and help improve the community.

A year ago, an anti-Glazer group managed to breach security and gain access to Carrington, displaying a banner proclaiming “We decide when you play”. This time around, the club came prepared as security guards and stewards guarded every entrance and building at the Aon training complex.

Following this, a peaceful protest is being organised by a supporters group called ‘The 1958’ against the Glazer family outside Old Trafford during the Norwich City clash to be played today in the Premier League, as the Red Devils look to bounce back after last matchday’s loss to Everton.

“Disgrace, not fit to wear the shirt”

With the club fearing a fan protest, the English club increased security in anticipation. Outside Carrington’s training ground, more than a dozen protesters – mostly dressed in black – lined up the road leading just before midday and made their way to the front gates of the complex 45 minutes later.

Police then arrived to disperse the protesters and deal with the matter in a proper manner. Meanwhile, dozens of security guards were stationed inside the training facility and the usual entrance to the complex was shut off by steel gates. Aside from protests against the Glazers, there seemed to be a bunch of fans who were upset at United’s players, with signs reading: “Disgrace, not fit to wear the shirt.”

Evidently, it is not just the club owners that fans are upset with, but also the first team. The squad have only managed to occupy the seventh position in the Premier League, turning out to be winless thus far in the month of April.

They have already exited the FA Cup, League Cup, and Champions League this term, which sees us end the campaign without having won a trophy in five years when we last lifted silverware in the form of the UEFA Europa League under Jose Mourinho’s reign.

The supporters clearly think that the players are at fault for the team’s poor performances, and anyone watching the side play in games will find it hard to argue otherwise. Some stars do not seem dedicated enough to run and work hard for their teammate and manager, while others look out of form and lack confidence.

Fans visibly protested the Glazers’ control of Man United last season as well- not that it is a very rare occurrence. The supporters stormed Old Trafford last year which led to our derby game against Liverpool being postponed. Perhaps the security has been tightened at our home ground but it remains to be seen if stricter measures will be taken at Carrington to prevent fans from breaking in again.

Whether this demonstration against the Glazers proves to work or not, all eyes will be on Ralf Rangnick’s men tonight to see if they can get the better of Norwich at home, playing against a side that is rock bottom in the points tally and look likely to get relegated to the Championship in the summer.
