Newcastle United make transfer bid for Benfica star Darwin Nunez amidst Manchester United interest

According to the French news outlet Footmercato (h/t Daily Mail Online), Newcastle United have made a transfer bid to sign Benfica star Darwin Nunez amidst interest from Manchester United. He looks to be in line to become one of the hottest prospects at the end of this season.

Nunez has raised his game to newer heights this term, becoming one of the most prolific strikers in world football in the process. That has seen him attract interest from major European sides like Man United, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Manchester City and other unknown clubs as well. Now, Newcastle have entered the transfer race as well as they look to use their wealth to finalise a move.

What’s more, the Magpies have even put in an offer worth £49million to the Portuguese side. However, the latter is holding out for at least £60million as they look to earn a sizable profit from his sale. Their stance could potentially lead to a bidding war at the end of this campaign, with many clubs vying for the Uruguayan’s services.

Concerns for Man Utd?

The Toons’ entry would be a blow for us indeed as it adds to the list of obstacles that we need to overcome to facilitate a move for the 22-year-old. While they have put in a bid for the centre-forward, we are not worried about the offer as it is likely to get rejected due to the Primeira Liga side’s stance.

That being said, we must still be wary of Eddie Howe’s side’s financial might following the ownership takeover last year. Then again, it is doubtful if the former Almeira man would be willing to move to St. James’ Park, especially when he has offers from elsewhere that would give him Champions League football.

That would be a concern for us as well since we are not in a position to guarantee CL for the next term. However, we are hoping to gain an edge over the competition using other factors. He did say recently that Edinson Cavani is his idol, so we could use the latter to chip in and lend us a hand.

What’s more, it has been claimed that Cavani has already given a positive recommendation to Nunez regarding a move to Old Trafford. We hope that the Red Devils ace can play a key role to help us sign the Benfica ace, who can be a valuable addition under the current circumstances.

After all, Cavani is nearing the end of his contract, and he is in line to leave us this summer. Our other options like Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood have uncertain futures as well. Even Cristiano Ronaldo is in the same boat as doubts can be raised about whether the superstar will be willing to stay put given how the season has gone so far.

Only time will give us an answer whether we can bring in Nunez to lead our attack from the next campaign onwards. We hope that is the case but let’s wait and see how this pursuit develops in the coming months.
