Transfer News: PSG lead race to sign Manchester United star Paul Pogba this summer

According to French publication Foot Mercato (h/t The Sun), PSG are in the lead in the race to secure the services of Manchester United star Paul Pogba in the summer transfer window. He seems likely to depart at the end of the season after largely failing to achieve success in his second spell at Old Trafford.

Pogba is out of contract this summer, and it seems unlikely that he will sign an extension in the coming months. As such, clubs outside England can engage in pre-contract talks with him ahead of a potential move after this season. Now, it is claimed that Paris Saint-Germain have already met with him to discuss a transfer.

The Frenchman has held talks with the Ligue 1 side’s sporting director Leonardo regarding a prospective move. As such, the midfielder is “closer than ever” to moving to France as they have identified him as a “priority” summer target. A transfer is a real possibility as he is happy about joining them, with his family also content about moving back to his home country.

Likely summer exit?

It appears that the 29-year-old is set to leave us for free after this term. It would not be surprising at all, considering how the central midfielder’s future has been surrounded by uncertainty for quite some time. That is especially the case when the French international revealed last month that he was disappointed with the lack of trophies that Man United have won in recent years.

The Red Devils are not in a place where they can guarantee the Premier League ace that the squad can genuinely challenge for titles from the next season onwards. After all, a rebuild is needed to get us back to our glory days and such a process would normally take some time.

Hence, we may see the Man United midfielder pack his bags to leave for the French club after all. Real Madrid and Juventus are in the fray, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side has the edge over them right now. The only boost that we would get is how our wage bill would be reduced when his high salaries leave our books.

The Manchester club must prepare for what lies ahead in the summer from here on out. We need to bring in a midfielder with world-class quality who would have the drive to bring success to Theatre of Dreams. Pogba possesses the talents of a splendid creator, but there have been times when it felt like he has not been giving his best to the team.

That is evident from the stark difference between his displays for the France national team and Man United. Hence, parting ways would be in the best interests of all the parties as it would offer a fresh start for each other. Let’s hope that the board will be prepared to replace the departure-bound Pogba this summer.

We never really saw the consistent, world-class midfielder at Old Trafford that we were promised when we signed him from Juventus. As such, it seems like we have outgrown him and our focus should now lie on replacing him properly- if he leaves this summer.
