Manchester United dealt a potential blow as Mauricio Pochettino could stay put at PSG

According to ESPN, Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit to sign Mauricio Pochettino as he could stay at PSG due to the wholesale changes that could take place at the club this summer. He has been linked with a move to Old Trafford to take over the permanent manager’s role ahead of the 2022-23 season.

The Argentine currently has a contract with Paris Saint-Germain until 2023, and he could fulfil that deal if this update is believed to be true. The French side could be subjected to several departures this summer, which could force the club to keep him on during the transition period.

Sporting director Leonardo’s future at the French capital is currently uncertain, while Kylian Mbappe, Angel Di Maria and Mauro Icardi are expected to leave Paris in the summer transfer window. The Ligue 1 side could decide to part ways with Sergio Ramos as well due to his injury struggles. Pochettino could stay put, offering stability in what will be a squad overhaul of sorts.

Man Utd need to push for Pochettino?

Pochettino is a solid option to bring to Carrington for sure, but he has largely created a mixed reaction among the fanbase. Moreover, one could even say that the Argentine is not that favoured when Erik ten Hag is another one of the potential targets for the coaching role.

That is especially the case when ten Hag has been interviewed by the Manchester club recently regarding a summer move. One cannot fault the supporters either when the Dutchman is clearly a more exciting choice than Pochettino, looking at the work he has done at Ajax Amsterdam.

Perhaps, this update would not be much of a blow for us when we arguably have a better option in Ten Hag. Moreover, the French giants would not make it easy for us as they want the Red Devils to pay a large compensation for Pochettino so that they can avoid the financial cost of sacking him.

It is good to know that the Glazers would not entertain the Ligue 1 heavyweights’ intentions regarding any potential compensation. It is not like Pochettino has been one of the best managers in world football either during his time at the Parc des Princes.

Not to mention, with ten Hag on the list, we may not even need to go down that route as we need someone who is experienced in rebuilding a squad. Those who kept tabs on the Ajax coach would know that he has done that twice in a matter of years, keeping the Dutch giants competitive. So one could say he could improve upon that output at a bigger club like ours with all the resources that can be provided.

Let’s hope to see an end to our managerial pursuit soon enough so that we can focus on acquiring the required transfer targets who are needed to uplift the squad for the next campaign.
