Flamengo president confirms transfer talks with Manchester United for midfielder Andreas Pereira
Speaking to Globo Esporte (h/t Manchester Evening News), Flamengo president Rodolfo Landim confirmed that the club is in talks with Manchester United regarding a permanent move for midfielder Andreas Pereira.
The United loanee has been in Brazil since the start of the current campaign, securing a temporary move to Flamengo until the end of the season in order to gain more first-team minutes after falling down the pecking order in Manchester.
Landim said that his club really likes Pereira, confirming that it is what the side want in the summer and that they would eventually like to be able to count on the player for their games in the near future.
“I can only say that Flamengo really likes the player and eventually we will be able to count on him. It’s what we want.”
The player himself has not hidden his desire to stay with the Brazilian side permanently after not getting enough chances with his parent club, and so a transfer in the summer could work out in the best interest of all parties.
“We like the player”
The 26-year-old never really saw his career in the Premier League take off, despite coming through the ranks at Carrington and remaining a presence in the first team for several years. Unfortunately for the midfielder, the competition in the squad has always given him a fringe player status, unable to impress his coaches.
Landim said that the club have had several conversations with the Red Devils, reiterating the fact that Flamengo have a contract with the United loanee and that they like Pereira. From his comments, it seems as though the Brazilian side are very keen on signing the player soon.
“Andreas is a Flamengo player until the middle of the year. We have a contract with him and we like the player. We’ve already had several conversations with Manchester United.”
After spending nearly his entire United career on the bench, the midfielder this season has become a key player for his loan club Flamengo and has been hugely impressive. Despite a recent dip in his form, the Brazilian side’s president has spoken warmly of the player and their interest in him.
Old Trafford currently plays host to midfielders in the form of Paul Pogba, Fred, Scott McTominay, and Nemanja Matic. Talented as he may be, Pereira does not rank alongside these players in terms of ability and experience in English football, which has worked against him in the past during his career in England.

It is perhaps why the Brazilian has left his parent club four times on loan throughout his time at the club. Now, it looks like he could finally be prepared for a permanent move away from the Red Devils, given Landim’s recent comments.
A new permanent manager is expected at the Theatre of Dreams in the summer, and with him, perhaps a massive squad transformation with several incomings and outgoings. As things stand, Pereira looks destined to be part of the outgoings at Old Trafford at the end of the season. And maybe it is for the best.
