Manchester United eye ex-Liverpool coach Andy O’Boyle for new deputy director of football role at Old Trafford

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are looking to snap up former Liverpool coach Andy O’Boyle for the vacant deputy director of football job at the club as they look to usher in a new era behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

On the pitch, the Red Devils are set to make massive changes too, with a new permanent manager being appointed ahead of the new season to bring back the glory days to the Manchester side after going five years without any silverware.

The club believes that the current director of football John Murtough needs assistance to help him with his job of meeting demands to return United to its former glory and make it a footballing superpower once again, competing for all available titles.

Despite being linked to Liverpool, O’Boyle is one of the names being considered for the deputy role to assist Murtough in his tasks. The club seems to be taking their off-the-pitch recruitment seriously, which will please fans.

Premier League executive

Once working for the Reds, O’Boyle is now the head of elite performance with the Premier League. His job involves formulating programmes and initiatives to enhance performance management for things such as fitness testing across the English top-flight.

The Northern Ireland-born executive has a background steeped in sports science, which explains his current job title with the PL. However, his general and varied experience is said to be appreciated and valued by the recruitment agency used by Man United as they assess contenders for the deputy director of football position.

United are looking to appoint someone to assist John Murtough in his director of football post.

The club are familiar with O’Boyle from his previous stint at United, when he worked briefly with the academy working with young kids aged nine and 10, back in 2006. Since then, he has gone on to work for bitter rivals Liverpool, before he took up his current job with the Premier League.

Clearly, the Premier League executive is familiar with the inner workings of a giant football club in England, with the Reds admittedly one of the biggest teams in the UK. Although his current job differs a bit from what awaits him in Manchester if he is offered the job, he seems to be held in good stead by experts.

One of Murtough’s first and most important jobs at the moment, along with chief executive Richard Arnold, is helping the club appoint a new permanent manager by the end of the month. Past managers appointed by the side have not had much success, so this upcoming recruitment is crucial.

O’Boyle would be expected to help Murtough out in this big task as well as take on additional tasks if he gets selected for the role. Given that the future of the first team is at hand, it is not a responsibility to be taken lightly.
