Transfer News: Juventus have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes (h/t The Hard Tackle), Juventus are considering a move for Manchester United target and Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo. PSG are also thought to be interested in the 23-year-old as his current contract with the La Liga club expires in the summer of 2023.

The Uruguayan defender has quickly gone on to assert himself as an integral part of the Blauranga backline. He has become the preferred option along with veteran Spaniard Gerard Pique in central defence for Blaugrana.

The youngster seems to be growing in stature and confidence with every match. He even managed to get on the scoresheet for Barca against Real Madrid in the recently concluded El-Clasico via an expertly guided header to put the ball past Thibaut Courtois.

The Uruguayan international has already played 33 matches across all competitions for the Catalan giants, chipping in with four goals this season. Araujo seems to be part of the long-term plans of Xavi Hernandez and this could add another layer of difficulty in securing his services.

Can Araujo stem the waters?

The Red Devils have been far too fragile at the back on several occasions. Harry Maguire has come under the scanner repeatedly for his questionable performances ever since arriving at Old Trafford. Eric Bailly has struggled to maintain his consistency whereas Phil Jones has been out with injury for large chunks of his career.

The Red Devils could thus look to bring a player like Ronald Araujo who possesses the calmness and physical prowess to assert himself at the back. David de Gea has been left to fend for himself way more than he would like in recent memory and Man Utd should look to add suitable reinforcements to their ranks.

At 23, the Urugyana is one of the hottest properties in Europe and seems to have a great future ahead of him. His performances have also been attracting a lot of interest and Juventus have been known as shrewd negotiators in the past which could harm our chances should we diligently pursue this deal.

For a top club, like Manchester United, the lack of silverware and stability at the back could prove to be an alarming issue. Signing a young defender like Araujo who is on the rise could prove to be a step in the right direction.
