Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell set to be sacked in boost for Manchester United to fill deputy director of football role

According to L’Equipe (h/t Daily Mail), Manchester United could be set to receive a boost in their hunt for a deputy director of football at the club as AS Monaco are looking to sack their sporting director Paul Mitchell.

United had made some massive changes behind the scenes over the past year, with the club hierarchy undergoing a facelift to provide more structure and dynamism at Old Trafford to help improve the team in all respects.

John Murtough was appointed as the side’s director of football a few months back, and the Manchester club now wants to hire someone in a similar deputy role to support Murtough as he goes about his daily business running the club.

Mitchell is not a new name to the Premier League, having worked with Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur previously. He then moved to RB Leipzig where he struck up a relationship with current United interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Widespread changes at Monaco

Currently, the Englishman plies his trade at Monaco, where has been for the last 18 months of his working career. However, the Ligue 1 side are expected to make widespread changes at the club soon to better their team behind the scenes going forward, and it is said that Mitchell will be sacked.

Not just Mitchell, but Monaco vice-president Oleg Petrov and manager Philippe Clement will also be dismissed if the latest rumours are true. The news broke out before the side’s 3-0 win against Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

With his prior relationship with Rangnick and the fact that the pair were spotted together at Old Trafford watching a FA Youth Cup game recently, there is little surprise to see Mitchell’s name linked to United after news of his imminent dismissal broke out.

The Manchester-born executive also has prior experience working in the English top-flight with Saints and Spurs, so his CV reflects knowledge of what is expected and needed in the Premier League. Alongside Pochettino, the sporting director played an impressive part in both teams churning out great players and putting in impressive displays against stronger opposition.

Monaco are not having a great season this time around in France, with the club sitting in seventh place in the league table. Once the champions of Ligue 1, the side have fallen from the top in recent years and have not been able to compete at the top for a while.

Given this, it is understandable why the French team are looking to make these changes behind the scenes. If they do, we can hope that it works out in our favour as we can snap up Mitchell for our benefit and hope that he replicates his previous success in the PL.
