Transfer News: Manchester United could make a move for Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou

According to transfer news on the Mirror, Manchester United are plotting a move for Sevilla shot-stopper Yassine Bounou. The club views him as a potential replacement for David de Gea who is now in the last 18 months of his current contract with the Red Devils.

The Mancunian club has struggled to maintain any semblance of consistency this season. They have been fragile at the back at times and have also struggled at the other end of the pitch. Despite all their ups and downs, the Spanish keeper has been one of the standout performers in this campaign.

He has been a rock at the back, slowly starting to cement his position as the first-choice keeper after having struggled a bit in the last couple of seasons. The 31-year-old keeper has been a great servant to the club, having now played 478 matches across all competitions for the Old Trafford outfit to date.

The Spaniard has shown great sturdiness at the back, also insisting that he is happy at Manchester United. de Gea is one of the few members who were part of the Red Devils squad that won the Premier League back in the 2012-13 season.

It is now believed that the Red Devils are targeting Bounou to bolster their ranks. The 29-year-old has cemented himself as an integral part of Los Nervionenses in recent times. He has played 33 matches across all competitions recording 15 clean sheets this season itself- showing his consistency in between the sticks.

The right move?

Man United do have the option of Dean Henderson in their ranks but his performances have blown hot and cold ever since arriving at the club post his loan deal with Sheffield United. Nagging injury issues and a spell on the sidelines due to Covid haven’t helped his case in any manner.

Whilst the English goalkeeper has shown immense potential and even deputized extremely well for de Gea last season, he could leave elsewhere in search of more game time. At 25, Henderson can’t really afford to waste the best years of his career warming the bench.

In such circumstances, the Moroccan international could be a useful acquisition for the Manchester-based club. The Montreal-born player currently has a £25million release clause in his deal with the La Liga club. Sevilla are thus keen on renewing his new deal and could look to add a release clause in the region of £63million this time around.

With the growing interest, Man Utd will have to move quickly if they are really interested in Yassine Bounou. Whilst the La Liga ace has shown great promise, it won’t be easy to lure him to the Theatre of Dreams given that de Gea is here until at least the summer of 2023.

More Manchester United

Not only is his club eager to renew his contract, but he is also playing regularly for a team that was challenging for the La Liga title until very recently. To go from that to playing backup to de Gea may not be the biggest step forward he can take in his career, even if it means playing for the legendary club that is Manchester United.
