Manchester United could sack Ralf Rangnick this season after realising “mistake”

According to the Spanish publication AS (h/t The Express), Manchester United could decide to sack Ralf Rangnick this season itself, as the board realise that they have made a “mistake” in appointing him as interim manager. They have been knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid recently, which has put curtains on their prospects of winning a trophy this season.

Man United had appointed Rangnick on an interim basis to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in an effort to steady the ship until a permanent manager is signed in the summer. However, it seems that the board are regretting their decision after realising the mistake they made with the current man in charge.

As such, the German manager could be taken out of the mix prematurely, and he is not even expected to be in contention for the permanent managerial role to be filled in the summer. It will be interesting to see how this situation would develop in the coming months if this piece of information turns out to be true.

Man Utd, Are you kidding me?

It would be baffling to see the 63-year-old getting fired at this point in time, considering how late we are in the season. It would not even make sense to go down that route, especially when we are still in contention for a top-four finish.

Moreover, blaming the Red Devils boss for the recent shortcomings would be highly controversial when it is the players who have let him down consistently. Our form really took a turn for the worse at the start of February under him, as draws to Burnley and Southampton in the Premier League and the embarrassing defeat to Middlesbrough derailed expectations.

However, Rangnick was not at fault as we had more than enough chances to win those games which we failed to convert. The recent inconsistency has resulted from the same issues as the players are either not good enough or not performing up to the level that is expected.

The likes of Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford have not performed to the desired level that we want from them, which contributed to the recent slump. The same can be said for others as well, so one would wonder why Rangnick’s future is being currently assessed when clear improvements are visible since he took over the job.

The prospect of missing out on next season’s Champions League could be a factor, but it will not help us in the least if there is no stability involved during a particular period. A managerial change is the last thing we want at a time when plans are being laid down to appoint someone permanently for the long term future. Let’s hope that the board acts reasonably in this matter and back Rangnick for the rest of this season.
