Manchester United want Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel before the end of season with an aim to exploit the Blues’ situation

According to the Daily Star, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has become the primary managerial target for Manchester United ahead of the new season, with the Red Devils looking to exploit the Blues of their current turmoil.

United are in the market for a new, permanent manager in the summer once Ralf Rangnick’s tenure as interim manager expires at the end of the season. The German was only appointed late last year to guide the club to a top-four finish.

Now, it is said that Tuchel is ahead of Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino in the list of candidates that the Manchester side is looking at, with the club thinking they can make an offer to lure him away from Chelsea.

The west London outfit is currently caught in a crisis where owner Roman Abramovich cannot sell the club, because he has had his assets frozen by the government due to his close links with Russian President Vladimir Putin amid the Ukraine crisis.

Tuchel overtakes Pochettino

Given this, Tuchel’s future has become increasingly uncertain at Chelsea, which has given United hope that the German is now available for hire and can be convinced to swap London for Manchester. This change comes after Pochettino had long been United’s preferred choice to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November.

Despite the Argentine having the backing of Sir Alex Ferguson, United CEO Richard Arnold believes that Tuchel is the right person for the job next term, and is trying to work out a way to appoint the incumbent Chelsea boss before the end of this season, if possible.

Tuchel has been a hit at Stamford Bridge, guiding the team to Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup trophies in the past year and turning the Blues into title contenders after Frank Lampard’s time at the club saw them drop down the Premier League table.

The German was also successful at PSG prior to his Chelsea stint, winning the domestic league back-to-back and taking them to a Champions League final for the first time in the French club’s history. He certainly knows how to deliver trophies, or at least get his teams to big finals- which would be the first step for us towards actually winning something.

Pochettino is now in charge of the Ligue 1 club, but his inability to win the league title last year and the recent UCL exit to Real Madrid have put his future at the club in doubt. However, they are on course to win the league this season, so it remains to be seen if he continues in France beyond the summer.

Tuchel is certainly a surprise name to add to the managerial candidates’ list, but there is no doubting his credentials and tactical acumen as a head coach. Chelsea’s future is also uncertain at the moment, so only time will tell if the German ends up in Manchester next season instead of London.
