Rio Ferdinand believes that the signature of Jude Bellingham isn’t the answer to the troubles at Manchester United

In conversation with BT Sport (h/t The Mirror), Rio Ferdinand made scathing remarks about the current turmoil at Manchester United after Owen Hargreaves did his best to talk up Jude Bellingham. The former Premier league defender also insisted that the club doesn’t have the culture and one player cannot change their current situation.

The Red Devils succumbed to another disappointing defeat in the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Atletico Madrid. This phenomenon of inconsistency has been all too prominent this season which has left the fans wanting more on several occasions.

After the narrow defeat to the club from Madrid, Hargreaves was speaking about how the signature of Bellingham could drive the Mancunian club in the right direction. The former Man Utd defender was quick to refute these claims and highlighted how the current problem at Old Trafford is more deeply ingrained.

Speaking to BT Sport (h/t The Mirror), Ferdinand defended his statements with some valid points as he shed light on the lack of effort from some of the players at Manchester United.

“If the culture at the football club isn’t right, it doesn’t matter who you bring in. You need a manager that can guide the ship, and United don’t have that at the moment. We’ve seen it enough this season, people walking away from this stadium or anywhere they’ve played saying ‘I didn’t get enough out of X, Y or Z player in that game’.”

Do these claims have any merit?

Many of the supporters in our fanbase would be echoing the same thoughts as that of the Man Utd legend. It is fair to say that there needs to be a shift in the mentality as well as the determination to see things through in this current crop of players.

The Red Devils have forked out £1.24 billion on transfer fees ever since Sir Alex Fergusson departed the club in a managerial position. It is thus evident that the lack of financial investment hasn’t been the problem at Man Utd.

The Mancunian club has also managed to lure some of the top players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, and Rafael Varane last summer. Despite these stellar purchases, Manchester United are now effectively out of contention from every major tournament with a top-four finish in the PL being the most realistic target at the moment.

The Old Trafford outfit has also seen a staggering number of managers come and go but none have managed to create any substantial impact ever since Fergusson left the Theatre of Dreams. While the singing of the Bundesliga starlet may provide us with some more attacking impetus and a possible future star, does it cover all of the teething problems at the moment?

We have shipped far too many goals at the back this season and failed to open up defences on numerous occasions. The midfield has struggled to assert themselves in games and there seems to be a lack of harmony or long-term vision in this club at the moment.

Purchasing exciting young prospects could certainly help us a great deal and Bellingham could prove to be a potential world-beater one day. That being said, the club needs a shakeup and a manager who can instil a strong mentality in this team should the Red Devils want to recreate their success of yesteryears.
