Team selection by Ralf Rangnick causing player unrest at Manchester United

According to Manchester Evening News, there is growing unrest and resentment amongst the first-team squad at Manchester United due to interim manager Ralf Rangnick and his team selection. The fringe players in the squad are growing increasingly bitter at being overlooked.

The German only took over at the club late last year after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked following a string of poor results. Rangnick was tasked with guiding the club back up the Premier League table and qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Despite only being at the helm for a few months, the former RB Leipzig boss’ time seems to be under extreme scrutiny by his own players, with some stars unimpressed with his CV and his methods to win games. For context, his sole major trophy was the German Cup with Schalke back in 2011.

These rumours will only have been intensified after the weekend’s 4-1 loss to city rivals Manchester City, with the Red Devils being outclassed and outplayed by a clearly superior opponent. The second half of the game was particularly poor, with Man United barely having any possession or making any shots.

‘Teacher’s pet’

While some players find it ‘bizarre’ to see how the side’s season is progressing so far, others look to be on the manager’s side as they acknowledge that all the blame cannot be pinned on Rangnick, who is only here on a short-term basis.

One common complaint that the players seem to have is favouritism from the manager’s side. It seems to be an issue that has stuck on in the dressing room from Solskjaer’s final months as manager, with one player described as a ‘teacher’s pet‘ due to his regular appearances in the playing XI.

Squad selection has proven to be a big problem with players like Marcus Rashford, Eric Bailly, Diogo Dalot, and Dean Henderson upset by the interim manager not giving them more chances to shine in the first team. The trio of Rashford, Bailly, and Henderson are all eyeing exits if the situation continues.

Bailly and Dalot will feel particularly frustrated at the circumstances in the team, especially when their direct competition in the squad has been unimpressive. Club captain Harry Maguire has been poor all season, yet Bailly has not been considered in his place. Similarly, Dalot was suddenly dropped by Rangnick in favour of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but the Englishman has done nothing to justify his selection so far.

This is not the first time Rangnick’s issues with players has come to the forefront, with prior communication issues with stars like Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial being reported. The German has struggled with handling the first team players at United, and it seems to only have gotten worse.

With morale low after the thrashing at City’s home ground, Rangnick will need to dig deep and find ways to boost his players and get instant results. 10 games remain in the Premier League, and he will need to come up with the goods as soon as possible to guide the club to the top four by the summer.
