Manchester United could have to spend in the region of €70-80m to secure the services of Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinković-Savić
According to Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Sports Witness), Manchester United would have to shell out at least €70-80m if they want to bring Sergej Milinković-Savić to Old Trafford in the summer. The Lazio midfielder could be seen as a replacement should Paul Pogba leave the club in the summer.
There has been quite a lot of speculation surrounding the future of the French midfielder. Whilst the 28-year-old has put in great performances from time to time his difficult relationship with injuries and inconsistencies have resulted in an oscillating career with the Mancunian club.
On the off chance that the former Juventus player leaves Old Trafford in the summer, Milinković-Savić can be viewed as an apt replacement for the French international. The Serbian professional footballer has become an integral part of the Biancocelesti over the years.
The 27-year-old midfielder has scored 55 goals and provided 49 assists in 284 matches across all competitions for the Serie A club to date. He forms the crux of the midfield at the Stadio Olimpico. His abilities on the ball going forward along with defensive solidity could make him a great acquisition. One can thus understand why the Italian club has put such a high price tag on one of their prized assets.
Does Manchester United need fresh legs?
The Old Trafford outfit already possesses a rich spread of options in the middle of the pitch with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Jesse Lingard available in the central midfield position at the moment. Not to forget that the Man Utd loanee Donny van de Beek is also making a great impression in his relatively short time with Everton.
The likes of Fred and Scott McTominay have been deployed in a defensive position on a recurring basis and the likes of Nemanja Matic have also filled in whenever necessary. Whilst you could argue that there has been a lot of inconsistencies in the performances of many midfielders in our lineup, is it really worth spending so much money on another midfielder when the club could be using this cash to strengthen other departments.
The Manchester-based club have struggled to assert themselves on the pitch in recent times. Man Utd suffered another humiliating defeat to Manchester City in the last match and were playing the fixture without any recognized striker.
Whilst Cristiano Ronaldo had a stellar homecoming last summer he has struggled to adapt to the demands and pace of interim manager Ralf Rangnick’s game on several occasions. Edinson Cavani has also been found wanting on occasions despite his determination.
The striking duo are currently in their 30s and the club would do well to add a young exciting striker to their ranks to future proof the attack. Their most recent defeat also highlighted their problems in the backline and the club could be tempted to add more reinforcements in the defensive department as well.

Whilst the acquisition of Sergej Milinković-Savić could be a great addition, one has to consider the huge splash that the Old Trafford outfit will have to make to secure his services. This money could be used in other positions on the field as made evident by their recent outings.
