Transfer News: Manchester United plan to renew Diogo Dalot amidst Atletico Madrid interest

According to the Italian media outlet Calciomercato, Manchester United have laid down the foundations to renew the contract of Diogo Dalot amidst interest from Atletico Madrid for a future transfer. He has gained more prominence under Ralf Rangnick and has had a turnaround in his playing career at Old Trafford so far.

Dalot was cast aside by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when he was the manager of Man United. That eventually led to the defender getting loaned out to AC Milan in 2020. Aaron Wan-Bissaka was constantly preferred over him despite the former struggling with his form several times. That has changed under Rangnick as he is in contention for the starting spot.

Clubs like Atletico, AS Roma and Fiorentina, have expressed their interest to secure the 22-year-old’s signature following his recent rise. With his contract expiring next year, they want to try their cards to facilitate a move in the future. However, the Red Devils are going on the offence and are looking to extend his current contract with them.

Man Utd to renew Dalot soon?

The Manchester club have made a great decision regarding the Portuguese international as he has been better than Wan-Bissaka in recent times. The latter is limited with his technical qualities, as his contribution on the ball greatly limits us in that position.

Full-backs have become more and more important over the years, with the likes of Reece James, Achraf Hakimi and Trent Alexander-Arnold becoming one of the best players in world football. We need similar outputs from the right side of the defence, but Wan-Bissaka cannot be that man for him due to his limitations.

Dalot is obviously not close to the same level as the right-backs mentioned above, but he has room for improvements, having already showcased the qualities that are required in modern football. As such, we must not allow other clubs to prise him away from us as Wan-Bissaka should be the one to move out.

More Manchester United News

We need to be wary of the interest from Atleti, Roma and I Viola as Dalot is in line to enter the final year of his current deal. They could try to pressure us with a bid in the summer transfer window, so we must push ahead with an extension and put an end to their pursuit as soon as possible.

Moreover, we also do not want Dalot to have any intentions to leave elsewhere with Wan-Bissaka returning to the fray in recent weeks. However, the latter’s recent poor performance against Manchester City could turn the tide in favour of the Portuguese defender. Whether a renewal would soon be signed or not would only be known in due time.
