Rio Ferdinand rips into forward Marcus Rashford after Manchester United transfer claims emerge
Speaking on the FIVE YouTube channel (h/t Mirror), ex-Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has gone in on forward Marcus Rashford after reports emerged that he was weighing up his future with his boyhood club.
News about Rashford reconsidering his United future broke after the club’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester City in the derby on Sunday, where the Englishman only managed to make an appearance from the bench in the second half.
Ferdinand, who won 6 Premier League titles with the Red Devils, said that the news about Rashford’s potential exit threw him off and blasted the player for supposedly rethinking his future at Old Trafford while going through a poor run of form and confidence.
“That’s thrown me, I’ve got to be honest. If that’s real, I can’t believe it’s real, I’ve got to be honest. If it’s real, and let’s take it as it is, you can only talk like that when you’re playing well. You can only talk like that when you’re performing and scoring, and Marcus isn’t doing that right now.”
Rashford has been one of the biggest stars to come out of Carrington in recent times, with the Englishman having a blockbuster start to life at Old Trafford as a teenager when he scored a brace on his senior debut in the Europa League, only to follow it up with a brace days later on his Premier League debut.
“I’d be embarrassed”
Now an established first-team player, Rashford is tied to his boyhood club until the summer of 2023. The Manchester side also has an option to extend the deal by 12 months, and it may be something that they could consider if recent news is to be believed in order to protect their forward’s market value.
Ferdinand said Rashford should feel embarrassed if the claims of a departure from United came from his camp, believing that the star has to be playing well before they start talks of leaving the side. Given how poor the team has been in recent times, the pundit said that now was not the time to decide one’s future.
“I don’t know where this information has come from but I hope it’s not from Marcus’ camp because I’d be embarrassed if it had because he’s not scoring, which is his job and hasn’t been decisive. The club is in a low ebb and you’re looking at your future. You’ve got to be playing well mate before you talk like that, I’m sorry.”
Our problems in front of goal this season is hardly a secret, with several points being dropped from situations where the club have neither been able to put the team in the lead nor have been unable to hold on to slender leads and put the game to bed.
Rashford’s poor form has been a main reason for that, with the England international looking woefully off the mark when he has taken to the field. As a result, the winger has only started 2 of the side’s last 11 Premier League games.

In a game that had neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Edinson Cavani playing up front, Rashford found himself on the bench for the Manchester derby despite having enough experience playing as a striker for the club. Although not in the form of his life, many would have expected him to lead the line for the side on Sunday, but once again, he was relegated to the bench.
With Anthony Elanga’s impact this term and Jadon Sancho’s recent resurgence, Rashford has also been unable to nail down a place in the wide areas up front. The news about the Englishman considering his future would have come as a shock to not just club legends like Ferdinand, but also United fans, who have adored Rashford in the past for the impact he has had on the side.
