Fabrizio Romano: Marcus Rashford considering his Manchester United future

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is considering his future with the club, having come through the ranks at Carrington and establishing himself in the first team.

The Englishman became an instant superstar in the 2015/16 season under Louis van Gaal, scoring twice on his United debut against Midtjylland in the UEFA Europa League after the side was short of strikers due to an injury crisis.

He further catapulted himself into the limelight by scoring another brace on his Premier League debut just a few days later, condemning Arsenal to a 3-2 loss at Old Trafford. However, he has not reached the same heights this season and looks short of confidence.

Romano said that the player is concerned about his lack of game time despite being fit, and may possibly look at other options where he would get more minutes. The forward was recently seen in a United shirt last night, coming on as a second-half substitute in the 4-1 loss against Manchester City.

Wants clarity

After quite the start to life in the first team for the Red Devils, Rashford has looked off the mark in recent seasons for his boyhood club. This season, he has looked terribly out of touch and unlike his previous self when he was running at defenders and showing quick feet to bamboozle them.

Romano said the 24-year-old’s current lack of first-team minutes has led to him seeking clarity from the club about his future. The England international’s contract with United expires next year, but the player is said to be professional in his dealings with the Manchester side.

To make things worse for Rashford this season, the rise of Anthony Elanga has seen him lose his place in the lineup to the teenager. Elanga at times has often mirrored Rashford’s initial stages of his career, earning plaudits from fans and pundits alike.

Jadon Sancho’s recent rise to form has also affected Rashford, with his spot on the left flank occupied by the former Borussia Dortmund man this term. Sancho even scored a goal last night against City to tighten his grip over a starting spot under Rangnick.

Although capable of playing striker as well, few would back him to replace Cristiano Ronaldo up front, despite the Portuguese forward’s questionable form in front of goal in 2022. Clearly, wherever he looks, Rashford’s path to gain more minutes in the team sees much competition from his teammates.

It always hurts to see an academy player leave the club, and in Rashford’s case, the heartbreak would be too much to bear for some fans because of the impact he has had on the team. Hopefully, we see a renewed player in him soon enough, so he can work his way back into the team and stay on at his boyhood club for years to come.
