Contract News: Fabrizio Romano claims Manchester United are looking to tie down Bruno Fernandes to a new deal

Speaking to The United Stand, football journalist Fabrizio Romano said that Manchester United were keen on tying down the future of their superstar midfielder Bruno Fernandes, with the player keen on staying as well (h/t Express).

Fernandes has been a smash hit at United, with the former Sporting Lisbon player moving to Manchester in the winter transfer window in 2020 and wowing fans with his talent. The player has single-handedly been responsible for most of the club’s attacking output, with his steady stream of goals and assists.

Despite Cristiano Ronaldo taking the attention this season, Fernandes has still been the heartbeat behind several United goals this term. For this reason, the club is ready to offer him a new deal, says Romano.

Fernandes was signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the club, but the 27-year-old has been a key feature for interim manager Ralf Rangnick as well. The German took over at the club after Ole was sacked late last year for a poor string of results.

“Bruno wants to stay”

At the dawn of the year, it was said that contract negotiations between the club and Fernandes had stalled as the Portugal international wanted to know more about the team’s situation by the end of the season. The Red Devils currently sit fourth in the Premier League, aiming to secure Champions League football next term.

Romano said that this situation has changed since then, and Fernandes is keen on committing his future to the Old Trafford side. This news will please fans, given how popular the midfielder is at the club.

“It is taking time, the club wanted to extend with him last summer but the situation changed. Bruno wants to stay at United.”

Fernandes has had a massive impact at United since his move in 2020, with the team performing drastically better with the midfielder on the pitch. He has regularly contributed to goals and assists for the Red Devils, and the club has him to thank for top-four finishes in the league since his arrival.

This season has not been our best when it comes to scoring goals but Fernandes has continued to be a shining light for us in the final third of the pitch. Such is his contribution to the team that it comes as no surprise why the club wants to retain him.

The ex-Sporting man has also proven to be an able leader, captaining the side on numerous occasions despite being at the club only for two years. He recently led the team out against Watford the previous weekend in the absence of club captain Harry Maguire.

In what has been a poor season for United, the midfielder has still contributed to 9 goals and 13 assists in all competitions for the club. Whoever the new permanent manager is next season, they would certainly be glad to have a player like Fernandes in their squad.
