Speaking in an interview with TNT Sports Brazil regarding Ralf Rangnick‘s appointment as an interim manager (h/t Daily Mail), Manchester United star Fred was critical of the club not having a plan in place regarding a permanent manager appointment.

The Red Devils dismissed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer late last year after a poor run of results which saw them slip down the Premier League table. Rangnick was roped in to lead the club until the end of the season in an interim role.

Fred claimed that it reflected poorly on the club to not have a permanent manager at the helm, saying that Man United were focusing on short-term goals which left the players in the dark about the future.

“I think it’s a little bit bad for us not to have one. At the moment it’s all about the short-term goals. We don’t know how it’s going to be after the end of this season.”

The Brazilian was recently the hero for United, as he came off the bench in the second half to fire United into the lead against rivals Leeds United at Elland Road as the Manchester club finished the game as winners in a 4-2 rout.

Long-term plan

The Brazilian has seen an upturn in form recently since Rangnick’s arrival at the club, putting in impressive performances in the middle of the park and winning fans over. His goal against Leeds has only made him more popular among the supporters.

Despite Rangnick’s arrival doing the midfielder a lot of good, the ex-Shakhtar Donetsk man said he found it strange that a club like United did not have a long-term plan in place when it comes to seeking out a manager.

“It’s a bit strange. I know in football it’s important to get good results as soon as possible, but it’s also important to have a long-term plan.”

Fred has questioned the short-term vision of the club despite results under Ralf Rangnick

A trophy drought lasting nearly five years is looming over the club in the summer, despite multiple managers brought in at Old Trafford to fix this damning stat. Fred himself is playing under his third manager since he moved to Manchester and is due for a fourth soon at the end of the season.

The Brazilian’s comments echo what fans have been thinking over the last few years, as the club have failed to bring in experienced coaches to help win silverware at United. Jose Mourinho was the last experienced and world-class coach that the Red Devils have had, and to no one’s surprise, the club won three trophies in his first season in charge. It would also be the last time United laid hands on a title.

The club have failed to identify a long-term managerial option following Alex Ferguson’s reign, which has led to major instability in the organization that appears to lack long term vision. Rangnick also did not have any say in the current crop of players, as the club opted not to bring in anyone new in January.

All eyes will be on who is appointed in the summer as the new permanent manager, and whether they have what it takes to lead the club back to glory. Only time will tell if the new appointment will prove successful at Old Trafford.

Ralf Rangnick believes that the Manchester United squad lacks mental strength.
