Ralf Rangnick on how the Manchester United squad is feeling following mediocre results
Ralf Rangnick has weighed in on the sentiment amongst the Manchester United squad following the recent mediocre results that they have endured. The Red Devils have failed to win their last three games across all competitions and have lost ground in the race for the top four while also being knocked out of the FA Cup.
Man United are currently preparing to face off against Brighton and Hove Albion tomorrow in the Premier League. The two consecutive 1-1 draw against Burnley and Southampton have cooled down their pursuit of achieving a top-four finish in the league this campaign and the club cannot afford to drop any more points.
Speaking in the pre-match press conference (h/t Manchester United official website), Rangnick has conveyed that the team’s morale has been down as a result of the three poor results. He expressed that it is normal for the players to be feeling so, given that they are also human beings.
“Obviously, when you’re 1-0 up in three consecutive games and concede an equaliser, this also affects the mind of the players. They say we should have been 2-0 or 3-0 up and, all of a sudden, it’s 1-1. This affects the mindset of players, it’s obvious. They are human beings, not robots.”
Rangnick goes on to add that it is imperative that the team make sure their dominance on the field is translated to a second or a third goal. That should give the team a lead to protect while also handing us a margin for error.
THE ONLY THING WE CAN DO IS SPEAK TO PLAYERS ONE BY ONE AND AS A TEAM, AND THINK ABOUT HOW WE SCORE A SECOND OR THIRD GOAL.”
How would Man Utd react?
There are times when we forget that the squad have emotions as well, and we ask too much from them regardless of the situation. In any case, the German boss and the psychologist Sascha Lense must have a personal conversation with each of the players to “solve” the issue.
Having the right mentality is the first step in achieving any success, so the coaching staff must help the players during these dire situations. Pep Guardiola, for example, does not criticise his players in public and that is by design. He does that for a reason which can also be applied here to showcase the increasing importance of having the right psychology.

At the same time, the squad must show a strong reaction by listening to the coaches and overcoming the dullness as soon as possible. They must use these hardships to strengthen their mind for getting the better of such cases in the future.
We were renowned for our ability under Sir Alex Ferguson to win late in matches which eventually resulted in the period getting known as “Fergie time”. We were at our best under him, where the mentality undoubtedly have played a role in getting favourable results. Whether the players can get over their issues ahead of our match tomorrow or not remains to be seen.
