Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani expected to leave in the summer

According to Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani is expected to depart the club at the end of the season, bringing an end to a two-year stay for the Uruguayan star.

Cavani has been much loved by the United fans, with his hardworking nature and darting runs in behind the opposition defence winning over the Old Trafford faithful. The striker has popped up in the right place at the right time, helping the team score goals at crucial junctures.

Romano now claims that time is up for the former Paris Saint-Germain man, with the striker leaving the Manchester club as a free agent in June when his contract runs out. This may force United to dive into the transfer market in the summer, looking for a replacement.

Cavani’s exit would leave United with Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford as the only available senior strikers in the squad. With Ronaldo hitting his late 30s and Rashford being used more as a winger, the Red Devils are expected to look for young strikers in the summer who they can recruit.

Free agent in June

Romano claims that Cavani would look to move from the Premier League to La Liga, in a quest to try a new experience. The experienced forward could be moving to Spain, in a league he has not yet had the opportunity to play in.

The Italian transfer guru also ruled out River Plate as an option in the future for Cavani, saying that the Argentine top-flight club was nowhere close to signing the striker for free. Given Cavani’s goal-scoring pedigree, it makes sense for him to stay in Europe and compete in the best, most competitive leagues around.

Although Romano did not hint at which Spanish club Cavani may be moving to, La Liga may well be gaining a vastly experienced striker. The Uruguay international has proven that age is just a number, adapting to the Premier League with ease despite being well past his prime.

Cavani’s time at United will be fondly remembered by fans, with the forward’s presence on the pitch always a reassurance for the supporters when the team is chasing a goal. His age and experience would also have been beneficial to his younger teammates, who would have learnt many valuable lessons from the striker’s time in Manchester.

Having signed Cavani for free, United completed a great business deal for a player who has a knack for scoring goals. United fans can also hope that the player extends his stay, with Romano claiming that the forward has not yet made up his mind about his next destination as of yet.

If El Matador’s time is truly coming to an end in June, then we can hope to see the best out of the striker in the coming weeks, with his goals contributing to our push for a top-four spot in the Premier League table. United currently sit fifth in the table, level on points with fourth-placed West Ham United.
