According to TNT Sports (h/t The Express), Manchester United have reached an agreement with Brazilian side Flamengo for on-loan midfielder Andreas Pereira.

The 26-year-old joined the club from PSV Eindhoven in 2011, initially making his mark in the club’s academy. Winner of the Denzel Haroun Reserve Team Player of the Year Award in 2015. It is by far the standout moment during his time with the club.

In the end, Pereira has made just 75 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions, scoring just four goals and making five assists. It represents a poor return from a player who initially promised so much. Overall it was a rather underwhelming time in England for the Brazilian who will now seek to begin a fresh chapter in his career.

Pereira has enjoyed success in South America and formed a key part of Paulo Sousa’s Flamengo midfield. Largely impressive over the course of the season, the 26-year-old’s error in the final of the Copa Libertadores saw Palmeiras win the title. It appears to have done little to dissuade Flamengo by pursuing a permanent settlement for his services.

With his contract at Old Trafford set to expire next year, it was imperative that the club got him off the books quickly. A deal of £12m plus bonuses appears to be a fair deal for a player who was at best on the fringes at Old Trafford. Given that we look set to lose Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba for free in the summer, the deal involving Pereira is something to cheer about.

A good deal?

According to The Metro, Pereira’s loan deal originally included a £17m buyout clause. Man United, however, were willing to renegotiate terms given that they stood to make 25% of any money received from a future sale. Whether this is a clause that will come good in the years to come remains to be seen.

With a key summer transfer window ahead of us, it is imperative that Man United get what they can for the players on the fringes. Pereira had no future at Old Trafford and the price quoted is an example of good business by the club.

Pereira, for his part, is keen to return to the international fold with Brazil. Whether the move to Flamengo will see him make the cut for Tite’s squad for the showpiece event remains to be seen. As things stand the move to Flamengo is a good deal for all parties involved.
