According to The Mirror, former Manchester United star Bryan Robson has made his feelings clear on the club’s trophy drought in recent seasons.

The Red Devils last won a major honour in 2017 when they lifted the Europa League under Jose Mourinho. It proved to be a zenith of sorts as Man United have failed to win another trophy since. The unwanted record will turn five years this summer should we go another campaign without silverware.

It is unfathomable that a club of Man United’s stature could go so long without winning a trophy. For all of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s optimism, the harsh truth remains that we were miles off challenging the top sides for glory.

Ralf Rangnick surely has a difficult job in leading the club to silverware this season. However, that is not to say that the German lacks a squad capable of competing. Man United have some of the best players in the world at their disposal and the onus is on their manager to get them to perform.

The Red Devils return to the field this weekend in their FA Cup fourth-round clash against Middlesbrough. Robson understands the importance the competition bears to the club, especially as a source of silverware.

“The FA Cup is absolutely massive for the boys.”

Manchester United lost last season’s Europa League final.

Man United have often made it to the semifinal and final of several cup competitions the last few years, but appear to lack the cutting edge to see it through. Several players in our roster are yet to win a trophy at the club and that first bit of success in a while could be what is needed to turn the club’s fortunes around.

“This group of players, what they’ve got to do is win something, to get that confidence and belief in each other. They’ve got to win something.”

Robson likened the situation to 1990 when a young Man United side won the FA Cup under Sir Alex Ferguson. The win showed the young players exactly what they are capable of and set the stage for the Red Devils’ dominance in the years to come. Whether history will repeat itself remains to be seen.

“As a group of players, when I look back to 1990 with Sir Alex, that first FA Cup and first major trophy win, that gave us all belief in each other, because we had quite a lot of young lads in the squad at that time.”

Mourinho won us our last trophy in 2017

Man United take on Middlesbrough in the FA Cup fourth round this weekend. The Red Devils are yet to hit top gear under Ralf Rangnick and there is no better time than now to do so. Hopefully, we will have something to celebrate at the end of the season.

It is very unflattering when a club of our stature goes this long without winning silverware. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, winning at least one trophy a season was common and we were competing for the league and the UCL title year in, year out.

Our players first need to embrace a winning mentality- understand that they are representing Manchester United on the pitch. The mentality must first change to give way for the tactical changes to have an effect. Hopefully, we take the FA Cup seriously this season and mount a serious charge to break our trophy duck.
