Stuart Pearce: West Ham United remain interested in Manchester United star Jesse Lingard

According to talkSPORT (h/t Manchester Evening News), West Ham United coach Start Pearce has confirmed that the club remains in the hunt for Manchester United star Jesse Lingard.

The English international is in the final few months of his contract at Old Trafford. With the January transfer window coming to a close, the Red Devils are in the final few days of gaining any transfer fee for the player and could potentially lose him for nothing in the summer.

However, all is not lost as a loan move could yet come to fruition this month. It could, at the very least, guarantee the club a token loan fee- not to mention, cover the player’s wages of £100,000-per-week. With the transfer window set to slam shut next Monday, it is now a race against time to find a solution.

Newcastle United are very interested in the player as they look to stave off relegation. The Magpies have won just twice all season and are in real danger of going down. They have, however, started to flex their newfound financial might and have already brought in Kieran Trippier and Chris Woods.

What next for Jesse?

Adding Lingard to the roster may give them a boost in the goalscoring and creativity departments. However, they are not the only team in the frat. Stuart Pearce has now thrown West Ham United’s name into the mix. The Hammers were keen on landing Lingard last summer and little appears to have changed since.

“Everyone is aware that we tried to get Jesse back again last summer and that will continue probably in this window as well but that is down to Jesse.”

Lingard is no stranger to the Hammers, having spent time with them on loan last season. He proved to be an inspired acquisition for David Moyes’ side as West Ham put together a strong run of results and guaranteed European participation this season.

Jesse Lingard had a great spell at West Ham United.

Lingard played a major role in that success, scoring and assisting key goals for the Hammers. Moyes has shown that he has what it takes to get the best out of the player and it appears to be an association that the Hammes are keen to rekindle.

Lingard has spent much time on the bench at Man United this season and will now have to make a decision on his future. With the FIFA World cup set to take place later this year, it is in the 29-year-old’s best interests to seek regular playtime. The chances of him being given a prominent role at Old Trafford are minute but there are other clubs out there who can grant him just that.

Lingard is a fine player who can stand out in a side that is competing for the top six. Despite Man United demanding higher standards, there is much that he could have achieved with us. But Rangnick and co appear to have other ideas and cannot guarantee the player the regular playtime he craves- something which has been evident with his lack of gametime in the past few months.

Given where both parties stand at the moment, it would be the right time for Lingard to end his two-decade-long association with the Red Devils. There is still enough time for him to go on and earn a name for himself elsewhere and for our club to chalk off one name from the wage list.
