Newcastle United end interest in Manchester United star Jesse Lingard after transfer talks break down

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle United have decided to end their interest in Manchester United star Jesse Lingard after talks between the two clubs over a potential transfer have broken down. He was seemingly looking likely to leave Old Trafford due to his desire of moving elsewhere in search of more game time.

Lingard has entered the final six months of his current deal with the Red Devils and has no intentions of signing an extension. Newcastle were keen on getting his services as they were ready to pay a loan fee while taking over his entire wages for the rest of the season.

However, negotiations between the Toons and Man United have ended as they did not see eye to eye on the subject of the loan fee that was to be paid. It is stated that the deal is now ‘dead’, which means that the Magpies may now look elsewhere for other targets.

Bad Decision?

Following the takeover of the Saudi-backed Public Investment Fund, it is well known how Eddie Howe’s side have been financially boosted as a result of the new ownership. They have used that funds to bring in players like Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood to help them fight off the relegation battle they are engaged in currently.

It is reasonable to think that they would have paid a good amount for the 29-year-old since they are desperate for quality within their squad. So if there were disagreements over the loan fee, naturally, one might question the demands made from our side since we have seen that Howe’s team are not hesitant to splash the cash this month.

It possibly could have been our last opportunity to cash in on the Englishman and get a modest fee for his services. Now it seems that the chance is gone unless another club makes an offer for him, with just over 5 days left in the current window.

West Ham United are also keeping tabs on the situation but it can certainly fire back at us if we loan Lingard to the Hammers and he ends up helping them to a Champions League spot over us. A move to St. James’ Park, at least in the short term, would have really been an ideal move in that regard.

If the England international does end up staying, we would have a versatile player on our bench that we can use for the remainder of the season. But that would mean us paying his wages until the end of this season and then losing him on a free if he doesn’t renew his deal.

If Rangnick doesn’t make use of the 29-year-old, like he hasn’t done on a regular basis since taking over from Micahel Carrick, then it would really be money down the gutter for us.
