Transfer Update: Newcastle United set to make a new attempt to sign Manchester United star Jesse Lingard

According to the transfer specialist, Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Newcastle United are expected to come back with a new attempt to sign Manchester United star Jesse Lingard in the January transfer window. With the January transfer window set to close at the end of the month, there is little time for the Magpies to make their move.

Lingard will see his contract with the Red Devils expire at the end of the 2021-22 campaign. Newcastle are vying to secure his signature at least until the end of the season when he will become a free agent. They are engaged in negotiations with his representatives to discuss the terms surrounding a potential move.

The Magpies have also made contact with Man United in the pursuit to bring the 29-year-old to St. James’ Park. Their desperation is backed by a valid reason since they want to survive the relegation battle this season. They are looking to boost their squad to achieve that objective, which is why they are keen to secure a deal for him in the coming days.

Potential departure?

The England international has seen himself fall down the pecking order at Old Trafford and has seen even youngster Anthony Elanga move ahead of him. Since he does not play a major role at Old Trafford and considering that his contract is up next summer, it would be wise on the club’s part to finalise a transfer for him in the winter window.

A permanent transfer would have been ideal, but it seems that that is not guaranteed as the Toons are open to the idea of taking him on loan. That could be down to the Red Devils ace since he may not be excited by the idea of potentially going down to the Championship following a full-time move.

We cannot hold it against the attacking midfielder if he is keen to make a move this month. Given his performances out on loan last season, Lingard had earned himself the opportunity to revive his Man United career but that has not happened. Whether a common ground can be reached regarding a move to St James remains to be seen.

One could argue that the Englishman should be kept in the squad since we are engaged on multiple fronts and have a long season ahead of us. It does make sense considering how injuries, suspensions or another Covid outbreak inside the camp can affect our depth. In that perspective, it is a good reason to keep hold of him for the rest of this campaign.

However, Ralf Ragnick has been using a three-man midfield recently, which reduces the need for an extra player in midfield. Moreover, we have good depth on the wings, with players like Marcus Rashford, Elanga, Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho possessing the ability to play there.

We could also use the fee that we earn through Lingard’s potential move to bring in a much needed defensive midfield addition. All in all, the need to sell him outweighs the benefits, which are enough reasons to facilitate a move this month. Whether the board are on the same page or not remains to be seen.
