Chelsea ahead of Manchester United in transfer race to sign Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni
According to The Sun (h/t ESPN), Chelsea are ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni. He has seen himself break into the limelight at the club and the international level in a short period.
Man United have dialled down their interest in Tchouameni since they are looking toward other unnamed targets, giving a boost to the Blues in the process. The latter has been linked with a €50million move for him as they try to add more quality to their already strong midfield.
Barcelona are also in the mix to sign the 21-year-old but will be facing an uphill battle considering the circumstances they are going through currently. It remains to be seen if a move to the PL can be facilitated this month since it would not make sense for the Ligue 1 side to weaken themselves during a season as they try to gain hold of the European spots.
What’s the plan, Man Utd?
It is baffling to think that we have cooled down our interest in the Frenchman despite him being consistent with his performances. His valuation may be a little steep, but he is young and can prove to be worth that amount in the future. With many years left in his bag, the room for growth is very high, which makes it even more impressive how he has made his mark at the top level at such an early age.
We have given the keys to Thomas Tuchel’s side as a result, which is disappointing, to say the least, especially when the midfield is an area where we need reinforcements. The only saving grace about this stance is if the Manchester club is eyeing other targets in a similar position.
He is clearly one of the better players in the French first division this season and would instantly add depth and quality to our midfield. It comes as a setback for the fans to know that we have apparently taken a backseat in the pursuit, but then again, nothing can be guaranteed until Tchouameni’s next potential move is officially confirmed.
Nemanja Matic is well past his prime and needs to be replaced in the long run, while Fred and Scott McTominay are not the most complete midfielders in the world. Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata will become free agents next summer if they do not end up signing a renewal in the coming months.

Players like Roy Keane, Michael Carrick, and Paul Scholes have been key to our team’s solidity in midfield over the years. A figure like that- commanding, confident, and consistent- in the middle of the park, would certainly be a sight that Man United fans would be itching to see.
