Transfer News: Newcastle United are interested in signing Manchester United star Jesse Lingard on loan
According to Manchester Evening News, Newcastle United are interested in signing Manchester United star Jesse Lingard on loan in the ongoing January transfer window.
The Magpies are currently battling against relegation and are keen to strengthen their side in the window to have a better run of results in the second half of the campaign. They have already landed Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood but it is debatable if the duo will be enough to keep them up this season.
Eddie Howe’s side has won just one game all season in the Premier League and have the fourth-worst attack in the top flight. It is beyond debate that they could do with some reinforcements in the forward areas.
One man who is on their radar is Man United star, Jesse Lingard. The Englishman is far from a regular at Old Trafford and has started just twice all season. It is a rather unfortunate situation for the 29-year-old to be in, especially considering his form while on loan at West Ham United last season.
Lingard led the Hammers to a top-six finish and proved that he could thrive in the top flight with the right guidance. With his contract at Man United winding down, he could be open to a new challenge. And this would perhaps be the toughest he has taken on in his career- should he decide to join them- with the Magpies in a relegation dogfight.
Milk Newcastle dry!
Newcastle are willing to cover Lingard’s £100,000-a-week wages for the rest of the season and could even be open to paying the Red Devils a loan fee. This is good news for the club that otherwise stood to lose the player on a free in the summer.
Man United received around £1.5m from West Ham for Lingard’s loan spell last term. It remains to be seen just how much they will hold out for this time around. The Magpies can guarantee Lingard regular playtime, something that will certainly aid his chances of making England’s squad for the FIFA World Cup in December.

It is fair to say that Lingard has reached the end of his stay at Old Trafford. A talented player, he is rather unfortunate that we could not build on the promise he showed at West Ham last season. With Newcastle desperate for signings, the Red Devils should do all they can to get top dollar. The Magpies’ apparent desperation and deep pockets make for a suitable combination for us.
It is, in fact, down to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Rangnick to some extent that Lingard did not build on the promise he showed at the London Stadium. But then again, those two watched him closer than anyone else in training and if the club thinks it is time for him to go, it is best that we get properly compensated for it. He is, after all, a tried and tested player in the Premier League who is yet to hit 30.
