Transfer News: Cristiano Ronaldo ready to quit Manchester United if they fail to make Champions League spots

According to The Sun, Manchester United superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo is ready to call it quits at Old Trafford should the club fail to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

The 36-year-old returned to Old Trafford last summer and has since continued from where he left off. He is the club’s top scorer and has bailed us out numerous times this season. To say that he has returned to a different side from the one he left in 2009 would be an understatement.

The Red Devils are no longer the torchbearers of English football dominance and have descended into a side looking to finish in the top four year in, year out. The club has also failed to win a single trophy since 2017 and appear no closer to doing so this season.

Man United are currently in the seventh spot in the Premier League, a mammoth 24 points off the top of the table. Despite having two games in hand, it represents a significant drop in quality and expectations at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo did not hold back in his criticism of the club in an explosive interview that he delivered last week. He expressed distaste at the club’s current situation and even hinted at cutting short his two-year deal should matters fail to improve.

Keep him at all costs

Matters could reach boiling point should the Red Devils fail to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League. The Red Devils are currently five points off West Ham United in fourth place. While we do have two games in hand, our performances leave much to be desired and it is far from guaranteed that we will pick up maximum points.

Ronaldo’s representatives have already met with incoming chief executive Richard Arnold. The player is keen to continue his career until he is 40 but has no intentions of representing a side that cannot compete for major honours.

The chances of Man United turning around their fortunes overnight is quite impossible. There is still work to be done and the fact that your biggest asset is unconvinced is a telling sign of where the club currently stands.

Ronaldo missed Man United’s last two matches with an injury. He is in contention to face Brentford later tonight and it remains to be seen if his frustrations will spill onto the field. He has, after all, looked an irritated figure on the pitch when things aren’t going our way in the game.

Arnold certainly looks set to face a baptism of fire in keeping the star striker at Old Trafford. Whether the club can fulfil Ronaldo’s expectations and improve their quality and performances in the months to come remains to be seen. Him leaving the club would also be a telling blow for his teammates, as it would send a really negative message about the club.

It would be anything but a vote of confidence from quite arguably one of the greatest players in the history of the sport and the psychological blow to the fanbase and the club personnel would also be something to consider.
