Manchester United targetting Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn in the summer transfer window
According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Manchester United are targeting a move for Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn in the summer transfer window. Darren Fletcher, the technical director at Old Trafford, and Sir Alex Ferguson are huge admirers of his profile and leadership qualities.
McGinn’s contract at Villa Park runs until 2024 and securing him could cost Man United around £40million in transfer fees. Steven Gerrard’s side is hesitant to part ways with him, considering how crucial he is to Villa’s system. Having sold Jack Grealish last summer, Villa are not keen to go down the same route with McGinn.
The Red Devils have prioritised signings in midfield and are keen to give their new permanent manager the tools he needs to succeed. Despite being linked with McGinn in the past, a move to Old Trafford never came to fruition. The Lions are now expected to offer the player a new contract in the hopes of warding off interest from other parties.
McGinn has shown that he is a dynamic presence in the middle of the park for Villa. With the Villians looking to move up in the world under Gerrard, it remains to be seen if they will part ways with the player, especially to a domestic rival. Meanwhile, Manchester United are not putting all their eggs in one basket and are keeping tabs on Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Yves Bissouma.
Man Utd to sign McGinn?
Our need for quality midfielders has reached such a stage that not bringing in signings this month could derail our chances of ending the season strong. We have been overrun by the opponents quite often and with ease since last year. The board should have addressed this issue before this season, but they failed to do so, which further highlights their mismanagement.
With Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic as our only natural options for the double pivot positions, the necessity for another addition has reached coiling pointel. Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata are all in the final six months of their contract and could end up leaving for free next summer. Meanwhile, Donny van de Beek’s future at the club is uncertain, further denting the strength in depth in midfield.
McGinn has played 129 matches during his time at Villa Park while netting 16 goals and making 21 assists during that time. Most importantly, the way he carries himself forces his teammates to raise their level, which is a must need quality in our squad.

The lack of leaders and a fragile mentality within the Red Devils squad was made clear to the public in recent times. Luke Shaw and Cristiano Ronaldo had mentioned how this issue affected them and it would be wise for the club to bring in players who could solve this situation.
The Villa star could be a great addition for this reason, and we should put pressure on Villa to force their hand. It remains to be seen how this situation will pan out next summer.
